Did you know? Starting 1st January, significant changes have reshaped how electric and electronic waste (WEEE) is handled worldwide. These updates stem from the Basel Convention on the Control of Transboundary Movements of Hazardous Wastes and their Disposal, aiming to better regulate the shipment of hazardous waste and protect human health and the environment. What does this mean for the metal recycling industry? ♻️ Stricter rules on international shipments will push the industry to develop local recycling solutions, reducing reliance on exports. 🌍 Recycling companies will face more responsibility to ensure compliance with environmental standards when handling hazardous materials like WEEE. ✅ Transparent processes and investments in new technology will be critical for staying ahead. As an Approved Authorised Treatment Facility (AATF), Unimetals plays a key role in managing WEEE responsibly. This new regulation directly impacts the way we do business, but we are fully prepared to meet the new compliance requirements. Stay tuned as we reveal how these changes impact our operations and how we continue to lead in sustainable metal recycling. 🌍♻️ Would you like to read more about the Basel Convention? It is estimated that more than 10,000 different PFAS compounds exist (highly toxic “forever chemicals”), but it is not known how many of these can be found in textiles. PFAS are used in textile products to provide properties such as water repellence, oil repellence, stain resistance, durability and thermal stability. A key study of the impacts of PFAS on circular textiles has been published by the European Environment Agency.

EuRIC - The European Recycling Industries urges swift action to reach a deal by end 2024 on the targeted revision of the Waste Framework Directive (WFD). The obligation for EU Member States (enshrined in the revised WFD) to introduce an EPR scheme for textiles is what we need to make the textiles ecosystem circular. More information on EuRIC Textiles' specific priorities & asks ahead of the trilogues below 👇

🚀 A significant step in the right direction but room for refinement. 📢 The European Recycling Industries’ Confederation (EuRIC) recently highlighted crucial issues in the ongoing trilogues regarding the Waste Framework Directive (WFD) revision focused on textiles. 🔑 **Key Points:** • EuRIC emphasizes the importance of swiftly concluding a deal on the WFD while advocating against the application of EPR fees to second-hand textiles. EPR should focus on new textile products to effectively drive a high-quality circular economy. • EuRIC stresses that second-hand textiles play a crucial role in the economy and are ranked high on the waste hierarchy. Therefore they should be excluded from EPR to prevent negative impacts on textile reuse and recycling markets. 💬 **Our Opinion:** Extending EPR to second-hand textiles will harm the reuse sector, which plays an essential role in the sustainable management of textile waste. We need clear guidelines to ensure EPR fees are fair and based on the actual recyclability and environmental impact of textile products, rather than a one-size-fits-all approach. Let’s continue to refine these policies to support both innovation and sustainability in the textile industry. 🌍👗 #CircularEconomy #TextileRecycling #SustainableFashion #WasteFrameworkDirective #EuRIC #fashiontofiber

dss+ carried out a study for #BSEF – the International Bromine Council, providing valuable insights into the composition of #WEEEPlastics, the presence of brominated flame retardants, relevant regulations, and available technologies. This thorough analysis was designed to assist stakeholders and policymakers in enhancing the #sustainability and effectiveness of WEEE plastics recycling across #Europe. The study found that improving the state of WEEE plastics recycling in Europe requires a comprehensive approach that addresses collection, sorting, regulatory frameworks, and technological advancements. By implementing the recommended measures, Europe can enhance resource utilisation, minimise #EnvironmentalImpact, and move closer to achieving a #CircularEconomy for WEEE plastics.
