Effective school principals play a crucial role in shaping a positive school environment. Impactful leaders in schools contribute to the enhancement of the school climate, increased teacher satisfaction and retention, and positive outcomes for students. To make a lasting impact on a diverse student body, school leaders must commit to addressing structural barriers to success through an equity-based approach. Educational inequities persist across schools, with students of color encountering challenges such as higher suspension rates, racial discrimination, and systemic barriers hindering their success. First week of being a teacher. Two boys (7 years old). One took the other’s pencil without asking. The owner of the pencil gave him a whack on his head. No questions asked, no statements such as , “hey, that’s mine”; just a straight whack on the head (for taking his pencil). Elise Boulding made an acute observation: “The culture of peace is something which is learned, just as violence is learned and war culture is learned.” Over the next 2 years, we consciously built a culture of respect, care and safety in our classroom. Slowly, we became a class where we chose not to use violence as our first response. The Peace Collective is excited to share a course co-created with the amazing Purvi Vora called ‘Building Peaceful Schools- A Leadership Journey Towards Positive Change’. A batch with 60 school leaders starts in October this year. But before we do that, we wanted to open this 6 week course (Aug-Sept) for a selected small group of school leaders and education focused nonprofits who are committed to use education for creating a peaceful society. They do this through direct services that include one-on-one support, informational events, leadership development opportunities, and community-based convenings and presentations. Their policy priorities align with issues identified by parent leaders in their network; their analysis of publicly available data related to education, census, and life outcomes; and strategic opportunities presented to K1C where parents are invited to the decision-making table on an emerging topic or issue of significance to education in Chicago.
