This is an exceptional opportunity for a social sciences postdoc to work in the Floating Future Research Project on the social values, governance and stakeholder interactions around upscaling floating solutions, with Margo Van Den Brink and Lummina Horlings at University of Groningen - Faculty of Spatial Sciences The Floating Future project is very special, it is the largest research program on floating solutions in the Netherlands, and one of the largest globally. With 10PhDs, 8 universities, 3 research institutes and more than 30 societal partners the network is truly unique. Interdisciplinary work connecting technology, sociology and ecology and close cooperation with stakeholders(governments, companies and NGOs) are at the core of the program. Societal impact is just as important as scientific impact, and this needs to be profoundly evaluated and studied. Check out all the information in the post of Margo below. Exciting news for PhD and Master’s students in biology, geography and geology: The next AURA Symposium takes place 19.–21.3. in Turku and the abstract submission open until this Sunday (12.1.)! The AURA (Aboa Universities Research Advances) Symposium is a biennially organized two-and-a-half day research and learning event for PhD and Master’s students from biology, geography and geology. The Symposium is organized jointly by PhD students from Turun yliopisto - University of Turku and Åbo Akademi University. The biennial symposium has been a traditional element in local meetings for about two decades. It offers students and researchers from different sections and departments a chance to come together, learn about each other’s research projects, and exchange ideas, encouraging further collaboration between the two universities and between the different fields of study. The next AURA Symposium takes place on March 19th – 21st, 2025, at Arken Armfelt (Tehtaankatu 2), Turku. The symposium will be split into four different thematic sessions, each being led off with a plenary talk given by one of the four keynote speakers (60 min) and hosting oral presentations by PhD students. The symposium also includes poster presentations by both PhD and MSc students and a pre-symposium session for new doctoral researchers to present their research plan. ❗ The abstract submission is open until January 12, 2025. The Symposium will be preceded by a workshop on presentation and poster skills, which will happen in mid-February. Registration for both the workshops and the symposium is now open. The AURA Symposium welcomes all students from Bachelor’s, Master’s and PhD programs of biology, geography, and geology. Participation is cost-free and study credits are available. 👉 For more information and registration, visit the AURA Symposium website: https://sites.utu.fi/aura/

POST DOC OPPORTUNITY: Towards A Mechanistic Understanding Of Biomineralisation (University of Cambridge) The successful candidate will work closely with the PI and a PhD student to measure the trace element and isotopic composition of calcium carbonate biominerals produced by marine calcifying organisms (corals, foraminifera, coccolithophores) grown under controlled conditions in laboratory and field settings. The experimental conditions will be designed to explore the pathways of ion transport and processes of crystal growth involved in biomineralisation, and will push organisms beyond conditions they experience in the wild. The task of this PDRA will be to characterise, as comprehensively as possible, how the geochemistry of the minerals produce by these organisms responds to those conditions. A good opportunity
I am recruiting for a funded MS or PhD student position in Geology at New Mexico Tech. The student map the geomorphic surfaces and hydrologic response units in the Rio Grande rift in Central New Mexico, to understand hydrogeomorphic feedbacks on dryland ecosystem dynamics, particularly shrub encroachment into grasslands. The project is supporting research at the Sevilleta Long Term Ecological Research site. The project in particular is mapping the geomorphic surface and deep soil profiles (up to 2 m) to understand soil correlations with grassland-shrub ecosystem boundaries, followed by a hydrologic field and lab characterization of the mapped units. If you are interested, please contact Dr. Alex Rinehart (alex.rinehart@nmt.edu).

Two (2) Ph.D. Positions at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas 1) PhD in Climate Adaptation Science to address pressing climate-driven issues facing the Southwest, such as wildfire, managing freshwater, managing for aridification, extreme weather and climate, wildlife, and climate and environmental justice. The PhD student would pursue independent research focused on addressing such issues, likely to involve some combination of ecophysiology, field sampling of disturbed forests, dendroecology, and ecological modelling. The student would have the opportunity to develop their own research and also participate in synthesis efforts across the Southwest as part of the Southwest Climate Adaptation Center (SWCASC, https://lnkd.in/gjqGmvm4). 2) PhD in Memory effects in forest carbon cycle to quantify memory and legacy effects in tree growth. The PhD student would quantify the magnitude and duration of climate legacies on tree growth and carbon fluxes across National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON) sites in the western US. A major focus of the position is linking dynamics in tree rings to those in NEON flux tower records. The student would have the opportunity to participate in field sampling of tree rings, processing and measurement of tree cores, and potential visits with collaborators at NAU, UCLA, and NASA-JPL. Bayesian modelling of carbon cycle processes is a major component of the project, but the student would have the opportunity to develop their own research. Applications due Dec. 15th through UNLV Graduate College: https://lnkd.in/gUqNqW_Z Candidates should email Drew.Peltier@unlv.edu describing their interests in the position and relevant experience, including a CV. I can answer questions about the position and provide details on how to apply. Or see https://lnkd.in/gdfFHGuZ. See attached for details. Lab: https://lnkd.in/gSiWqUcq
