So you want someone with a healthy appetite for it, But a key component to that is self awareness. "AlL OF thE bEst lABORERS aLReaDY work FoR somEBoDy eLSe" Is that an excuse to not build a 5-star field crew? Look, I don't care if they're subs or if they're working for you in-house... The same principles apply: 1. Know WHO you need 2. Communicate HOW they will contribute 3. Pursue them using every channel necessary (Facebook Organic, Indeed, Cold calling, Facebook Ads, etc.) The key here is you need to be excruciatingly clear with your messaging. Throwing up a job post that says "we're hiring" and then complaining about the "lack of quality labor" in the marketplace is a lazy response.

Hiring might be the hardest part of growing a law firm. That saying about Hire Slow, Fire Fast? It's 100% true. I used to hire fast. If I met somebody I liked and the resume was decent, I'd hire them on the spot. Boom. Let's go. Not a great strategy. Scott and I had a stretch early on where just about every person we hired ended up not being a good fit. Our hiring success rate has improved dramatically in recent years, due largely to slowing down. Two things have helped us do that: We have a defined hiring process now. I've gotten better at following our process. Slowing the process down gives time for potential red flags to bubble up. It's impossible to know whether someone will fit at the firm based on one conversation. Fit is about a lot more than personality. It's also about attitude, communication style, and actual experience (as opposed to what the resume says). Now, instead of hiring based on a single interview with one person, a candidate meets with multiple members of the team over more than one interview. I'll still try to shortcut the process, and it's amazing how that comes back to bite me every single time. I even did it in the last six months!
