I have a question would anyone be able to explain? Why as a graphic design graduate are jobs so far and few. If there are any jobs they require 1 or 2 years of experience this also includes graduate or entry level roles most of the time. So as a graduate with only a small amount of significant work experience from my time as a level 2 and level 3 student in college and 3 months in two different graphics related roles and voluntary work for 2 companies on top of freelance work, how is it that I do not have enough to get a graduate or entry level role? The bigger question is, does the system work? school - college - uni. To finally "2 years of experience needed"

Do you want to work in book design? 🧑🎨📕 I recently spoke with a Director of Art & Design at Penguin Random House who gave me some recommendations👇: ✨Portfolios ✨ - For entry level, aim for at least 30% of your portfolio to be book cover designs - For junior level, aim for 50% to be book covers while the other 50% can be dedicated to other designs related to publishing - For senior level, almost all of the portfolio should be centered around book design. However, not having this will not automatically disqualify you as it all depends on the hiring manager - Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign) are what many hiring managers look for on resumes. However, don't be afraid to mention free tools like Procreate as it can show you have transferable skills. - Aim for a high-end and clean sense of design in your work - Know the difference between designing book covers and magazine covers 💼 Work Experience 💼 - Working for a smaller publishing house can be an amazing opportunity as having a smaller team means you get to be hands-on in more activities (broadening your work experience) 💡Key Skills 💡 - Strong portfolio, personality, being on-time, showing up consistently, responding quickly to questions, passion for the work you are doing, proper grammar and syntax, prioritizing deadline, and collaboration - Canva is a nice add-on ❗Pro Tip❗: If you’re an illustrator, try sending a postcard of your work! #bookdesign #bookcover #publishing #publishingcareers #bookjobs #portfolio

💥It's a pattern many creatives know too well: companies look to hire senior-level illustrators or artists with the more extensive skills and experience and then won't pay accordingly. Salaries too often amount to entry-level or even intern work, not in recognition of the years spent working hard, growing, and learning as a senior creative. Professional experience indeed gives depth, versatility and a unique vision to projects making it more tangible in return. Compensation of talents are not about the budget but being an investment in quality with impact. #creativeroles #illustration #design #creativeindustry #valueofexperience

Working with a consultant, is different then hiring a graphic designer or secretary. There, once you communicate what you need, it is their #responsibility to execute the work. However, when working with a #consultant, they will #work with you, but the work is also yours. And it's not always easy; 🕵♂️ To reevaluate everything you do (Your what?) 🕵♂️ To define (or evaluate) your core values (your who?) 🕵♂️ To refine your #mission (your why?) 🕵♂️ To #communicate it and act on it 🕵♂️ To do all that in a way that feel safe for everyone on your team But if you want to #GROW 🦅, it is not always enough to keep on doing what worked until now. What may have worked 5 years ago, or with fewer clients, or when you started out, is not usually what will work when you are ready to #SCALE 🪜 It may take work, but it's a worthwhile investment 🙂 What do you think?

I recently interviewed 10 candidates for a designer role at Sweet Cherry Publishing . I was delighted by the number of applicants but one thing really surprised me. 7 out of the 10 applicants asked me if Sweet Cherry Publishing, would provide not just the software, but the hardware, they would need to do the job. Naturally we do - but I was surprised the candidates asked the question for an in-house, permanent role. It seems this wasn't always the experience these candidates had when looking for jobs. Anyone working in the Design industry knows just how expensive the Creative Suite is. They also know how expensive a suitable computer is. The size of the files, and the memory used by applications like photoshop and indesign have to be huge to cope with book publishing files. The applications can be cheaper for students, but once out of university, or if you are trying to self teach, the price is hugely restrictive. If as an industry, potential applicants are deterred from learning or even applying for jobs, through fear of not being able to afford the equipment/software, is our industry in danger of becoming ever more elite? Are we in danger of losing a whole generation of creatives because they can't afford to learn on suitable software? Here at Sweet Cherry we pride ourselves on finding applicants from different backgrounds, and giving people a chance even if they haven't been to Uni. We also ensure any sample interview tasks we set, are accessible on different ranges of software. When the industry is fighting for survival because of Artificial Intelligence, it's vital we make sure the next generation of creative talent has the chance to create real and original design. I think it's really important that as employees we widen the net when recruiting, and understand what potential applicants might need in order to apply for a role in design, making sure that people from all financial backgrounds have a chance of success. We should think about how we word our job adverts, what measures we have for skills and how we appraise an application. #SweetCherryPublishing, #EveryCherryPublishing

The Multifaceted Job Conundrum: Videographers as Editors and Graphic Designers I’ve noticed a troubling trend in job postings lately, and I think it’s time we addressed it. Many companies are advertising for videographers but then expect them to also handle editing and graphic design. This is a big problem, and here’s why: 1. It’s Too Much to Ask: Each of these roles—videographer, editor, and graphic designer—requires its own set of skills. Expecting one person to be an expert in all three is unrealistic and unfair. 2. Misleading Job Descriptions: When you apply for a job, you expect the title to match the responsibilities. Calling someone a videographer and then piling on editing and graphic design tasks is misleading. 3. Unfair Pay: If you’re doing the work of three people, you should be compensated accordingly. Unfortunately, these job postings often come with a salary that doesn’t reflect the extra workload. 4. Burnout Is Real: Overloading employees with too many responsibilities can lead to burnout and decreased job satisfaction. We need to respect professional boundaries to ensure a healthy work-life balance. To employers, let’s be clear and fair in our job postings. Clearly define the responsibilities and offer a salary that matches the skills and effort required. To job seekers, know your worth and don’t settle for less. If you have multiple skills, they deserve to be recognized and fairly compensated. Let’s work together to create a job market that values specialization, respects professional boundaries, and treats everyone fairly. #JobMarket #Videography #Editing #GraphicDesign #FairCompensation #WorkLifeBalance
