"It could take one hurricane, one global pandemic, one lost job. Many of us are living on the brink..because of gaps in our systems. There's going to be no true safety and security for me and my family until there is the same for every family in extreme poverty around the world. That's what I want more people to take up into their vision and mission for #SDG1." Watch the full video here: bit.ly/4ap7O5y ————————————- In my adolescence I lived through long stretches of family members being unemployed. It hit home for me that very little separated me from the teenagers experiencing homelessness who I served free meals to every week. We had no difference in our innate ability or long term potential, the main difference was access to a safety net of support. Poverty is not a matter of charity, but a matter of justice. There are many different root causes of poverty and solutions cannot be one size fits all. But there are evidence-based tools that we know work: - Programs that build interpersonal skills and networks, creating confidence and hope that a brighter future is possible - Robust social assistance systems and cash transfers that put tools for breaking poverty traps directly in people's hands - Systems-wide investments in human capital training and apprenticeships that provide a supportive on-ramp into the workforce —————————- I'm inspired by those that recognize business as usual isn't working, and are committing to prioritize SDG funding and implementation to ending poverty. I want to see global policymakers, national governments, and people everywhere reject a status quo where where 700m+ people live without access to their full rights to wellbeing, dignity, and security It's a choice we can make, and it's possible in our lifetimes. Thanks to United Nations Foundation for highlighting this issue.

In social work, achieving collective impact goes beyond policy and programs—it requires a community-driven, justice-centred mindset. This talk emphasizes how true change happens when we allow ourselves to be led by the people we aim to serve. By focusing on their strengths and building on the interventions they have created, we combat the “expert mentality” and foster real change. Sustainable change and addressing systemic injustices start by recognizing the power of local voices and letting them lead. Worth a watch for anyone in social development! At Sustainable Futures Global, we believe that true, lasting impact is built through inclusive, community-centered approaches. That’s why we prioritise participatory methods, when ethically appropriate, across our projects and initiatives, ensuring that the voices of those most affected by the issues we address are heard and integrated into every phase of our work. A key aspect of this approach is selecting culture-appropriate participatory methods that resonate with each community’s unique context. By using methods that align with local customs and values, we enhance engagement and ensure optimal uptake, fostering ownership of the solutions co-created through these processes. Participatory methods enable us to address global challenges with respect for local knowledge and needs. We’re committed to amplifying the impact of these culturally attuned practices, as they align with our mission of fostering equitable partnerships and resilience from the ground up. Institute of Development Studies website is full of valuable resources, and we are pleased to see the ethical considerations of participatory methods highlighted on their website. We highly recommend consulting this hub of information for anyone interested in the topic, and practices. #equitablepartnerships #participatorymethods #communityresilience #researchethics
What are participatory methods? 🤔 Participatory methods are a range of activities that sit within participatory values and principles. They enable people to play an active and influential part in decisions that affect their lives. In a multipolar and global world, grievances no matter how distant they may seem, will always impact your own life. As an NGO from the Global North, we aim to consciously raise awareness within our own peer group. It is important to us to promote an empowering view of the Global South while also extending assistance where needed. However, it is equally important for us to critically examine our own role and to encourage those around us to communicate about our collaboration in a nonviolent and antiracist manner, exemplifying these values. We have outlined some of our key approaches in the slides above. Does this post trigger you? Good. Then start right there and unlearn with us. ‘White fragility’ is a real problem, and addressing it begins with you. #girlimpact #tonigarrnfoundation
