Women in peacekeeping currently face three main challenges: the exclusion of and discrimination against female peacekeepers; the relegation of female peacekeepers to safe spaces; and SEAHV [sexual exploitation, abuse, harassment and violence] of female peacekeepers. This, despite the fact that having having women in peacekeeping missions is associated with success. The UN Security Council has called for doubling the number of women in uniformed components of peace operations by 2028. Currently, only 6% of all uniformed military, police and justice and corrections personnel in field missions are women. Even though remarkable progress has been achieved since the adoption of the Uniformed Gender Parity Strategy, efforts are still needed to reach our targets for 2028 and beyond and sustain those that have been met. 

Today's #NATOPASofia key highlights on global challenges and strategies for #NATO #Allies: 🔹NATO was urged to strengthen ties with the #GlobalSouth to resist rising Russian and Chinese influence, emphasising cooperation on security threats and practical concerns like food security and job creation. 🔹Protecting cultural heritage in conflict zones, including the development of comprehensive policies, robust legislation, and integration of protection principles into security forces' education and training were prioritised. 🔹The panel addressed conflict-related sexual violence, stressing the need for policies promoting gender equality, protecting civilians, and ensuring justice for survivors. 🔹Tackling water insecurity and its implications for social, economic, and military resilience, urging reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, national response capacity development, and resource allocation for disaster preparedness was emphasised. The wounds from the #genocidal attacks by Myanmar’s military in 2017 are still fresh, and now the #Arakan Army, an ethnic armed group, is inflicting further atrocities on the community in their fight against military oppression. Over the course of two years, the Support to Civil Society Organizations (SCSO) in Ukraine programme, funded by the UK's Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, has helped civil society organizations (#CSOs) engaged in the country's recovery, support, and development. In particular, the support centre for people with special needs "Emmaus" assists people with disabilities and their families, improves their mental health, and helps them find employment. The Human Rights Center for military personnel "Princip" advocates for the rights of servicemen and creates real mechanisms to improve the lives of their families. At a meeting with Ukrainian diplomats, President Zelensky highlighted the need to establish a new government institution that will work closely with the global Ukrainian community. For the first time in our history, a significant portion of the Ukrainian population resides abroad. Today, Ukrainians are present in all corners of the world and in various countries. These millions of people form diasporas from different eras and waves of migration. It is vital for us that Ukrainians, wherever they may be, maintain a strong connection with the Ukrainian state and continue to support our nation's defense. The new institution should essentially function as a Ministry of Ukrainian Unity, tasked with regulating and strengthening the relationships between Ukrainians living abroad and their homeland. The war has brought numerous challenges to modern Ukrainian society, requiring us to adopt a more comprehensive approach than simply focusing on Ukrainians living abroad. In my opinion we must create a Ministry of Human Resources that will oversee cross-sectoral efforts, addressing the needs of those in the diaspora, individuals displaced by the war, internally displaced persons, veterans, and their families. #wearetogether
