Today, we join with UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency in honoring #WorldRefugeeDay and in acknowledging the strength and courage of people who have been forced to flee their home country to escape conflict or persecution. A year into its civil war, Sudan is experiencing the world’s worst displacement crisis. Reporting about the war in Sudan is clouded by three oversimplified narratives – “forgotten conflict”, “war of two generals” and the “proxy war” classification. Gerrit Kurtz (SWP) calls for a more nuanced phrasing by journalists and policymakers. "But given the scale of the suffering in Sudan, the stark differences are striking. Sudan has become the world’s largest displacement crisis. Nowhere else have so many people been forced to leave their homes – around 11 million, more than eight million of whom since the start of the war on 15 April 2023. With increasing urgency, the United Nations and humanitarian organizations are warning about an imminent famine and Sudan experiencing the “world’s largest hunger crisis”. https://lnkd.in/gVUVC7Xe

The battle for El Fasher, North Darfur’s capital, illustrates Sudan’s deepening crisis as the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) clash for control. The city’s strategic importance as an agricultural hub, cultural center, and humanitarian aid gateway has made it a focal point of the war. Since the RSF’s siege began in May 2024, El Fasher’s residents have faced severe food, water, and medical shortages, with escalating violence and displacement. The city’s collapse could exacerbate regional instability, affecting neighboring countries like Chad and Mali. While the analysis highlights the impact of war, it insufficiently addresses the role of regional actors in perpetuating violence. A comprehensive solution requires inclusive governance, accountability, and efforts to curb external interference fueling the war.
