Our study investigated how different playing formations and teams ranking in Serie A (the top Italian professional soccer league) affect the physical performance of soccer players. By analyzing data from 375 players, the we found that: • Higher-ranked teams had a higher percentage of high-intensity accelerations. This suggests that intense effort is crucial for success in soccer. • The 4-3-3 formation required more accelerations from players, especially in high-ranking teams. Notably, this study is the first to apply the concept of percentage of acceleration (Sonderegger et al., 2016, 2019) instead of traditional fixed thresholds with elite soccer players. Moreover, we established performance benchmarks that can help coaches evaluate players and prevent overtraining. Our research provides valuable insights into the physical demands of soccer, particularly in the Serie A league, and offers practical guidance for coaches and players to improve training and game strategies. Player development is crucial for the National Soccer League (NSL). Despite soccer's growth in the U.S., elite opportunities for young talent remain scarce. While MLS has boosted visibility, the odds of an American player reaching it are about 1 in a million. The NSL aims to change this by providing a more accessible pathway from grassroots to professional play, identifying and nurturing overlooked talent. Involving top-level coaches and scouts, the NSL will offer trials to assess technical skills, physical attributes, and mental toughness. Successful participants will transition from amateurs to professionals. To build its profile, the NSL will feature these trials in a documentary series, showcasing the personal journeys of potential stars. ‼️ NFHS to Write National Playing Rules for HS Flag Football The NFHS has been asked by member associations to publish national playing rules for flag football, which is currently played under a number of rules codes. A task force is currently being assembled to formulate plans, including appointment of a rules committee & a timetable for implementation. This would be the 18th sport for which the NFHS writes national playing rules. The popularity of flag football – for boys and girls – has been growing at the youth levels for the past 10 years. In 2023, about 500,000 girls ages 6-17 played flag football – a 63 percent increase since 2019. The NFHS is excited about this new sports opportunity – particularly for girls.
