What people think teaching abroad is: - It's a holiday, all day, everyday. - Repeat the same thing everyday in class. - You have a lavish life. - Language is always a problem. - Isolation is your life What it usually is: - The reality is, teaching abroad requires the same level of dedication and hard work as teaching in one's home country, if not more due to cultural and language barriers. - Different cultures have different learning needs and styles. A teacher needs to adapt and evolve according to the country they're in. - Often, teachers can earn more teaching abroad than in their home countries, especially when considering benefits like housing allowances and cost of living. - Many international schools teach in English, and learning the local language, while beneficial, isn't always necessary to effectively teach. - With technology, it's easier than ever to stay connected with loved ones. In fact, many find they build a new 'family' within the community of international teachers. It's not all pain. Remember you chose this life. And like everything we choose, it comes n a package.

We are celebrating our 2023-2024 academic year successes! 50% of our English as a Second Language (ESL) students moved up a course level. 71% of our Level 4 ESL students exited the program and are fully bilingual. 11 students earned their GED. 38 GED official subject tests were passed, and a remarkable 92% of our GED students pass a subject test on their first attempt. 8 students passed their U.S. citizenship test and became U.S. Citizens. To keep their skills sharp, 192 students are participating in our summer ESL Conversation Class and GED Bootcamp. Looking ahead to the fall semester, we have already registered more than 300 students. We know that when an adult learner becomes fully bilingual and/or receives their GED, they can earn nearly $8000 more annually. (Bureau of Labor Statics, 2022). This impacts their entire household and ultimately the community as a whole. #community #adulteducation #learning #literacy #wins

...Continued from last post 𝐎𝐝𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬: 1️⃣ Change in Curriculum – American vs. British English (Freshman Comp Class): I remember the confusion of hearing things like APA and MLA for the first time. I was so baffled; it felt like all my years of learning how to write essays had gone to waste because this was a completely new system of writing to me. 2️⃣ Assignments: Back home, people spoke about how schooling abroad was very easy compared to the Nigerian system. While there is some truth to that, it's also not entirely true. I would say schooling abroad (from my experience) is a different kind of hard—maybe the good kind of hard, sometimes. 3️⃣ Ignorance: You will understand this better later. When they say ignorance is bliss, well, I learned a different version - Ignorance is not bliss. It is the kiss of death. Looks like there are more marvels than oddities so first semester was a win then.
