As social media becomes normalized in kid’s lives + inflation causing the number of those living in poverty to increase-Social Emotional Development (SED) has decreased among children in grades K-12. But why does this matter? Well because the foundation of critical thinking, leadership, problem solving, and you guessed it- relationship building, are all connected to SED. And that connection begins in our brains (which btw do not stop developing until we are 25). That’s why schools everywhere are starting to invest in STEM programs + camps because STEM programs (if provided outside of traditional environments) are statistically proven to increase SED + give children critical skills that will help shape the future. Ranchers and Astronauts... Athletes and Bakers.... Engineers and Educators ..what ties them all together? #STEM Education. Providing access to #stemeducation programs at an early age can change the narrative for rural communities. Typically, rural communities face unique challenges in accessing quality STEM education due to limited resources, geographic isolation, and a lack of exposure to STEM opportunities. However, the Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation STEM Center programs are fostering a strong connection between rural communities and STEM education. This is essential for promoting economic development, bridging the digital divide, and empowering the next generation with the skills needed for success in a rapidly evolving technological landscape. The Ripken Foundation's focus on community engagement, mentorship, and partnerships with local industries plays a pivotal role in nurturing STEM interest and proficiency among rural youth, that ultimately contributes to the progress and prosperity of students and their communities.

Did you know that there are several barriers to STEM education? This is especially true for schools that are in underserved communities, as they lack the funding needed to provide quality STEM education. These barriers include: Cost: Materials, teacher training, and retention of educators can be costly. Lack of established standards: This makes it challenging to create engaging and relevant curriculum Teacher certicfication: Not every teacher has the background to teach STEM and the demands far outweigh the supply. Consistency across grade levels: In order for STEM education to be successful, there needs to be a clear linear STEM learning pathway from elementary school through high school. This includes scaffolding upon prior knowledge from one grade to another. Lack of equity: BIPOC and women are all underrepresented in STEM fields. This also applies to students with different abilities such as dyslexia, those on the autism spectrum, have high anxiety, or other learning challenges that may deter them from wanting to enter STEM fields. STEM Generation is working to knock down these barriers through equitable and fully donated STEM learning opportunities, as well as teacher support and professional development.
