Had a client this week that contacted me about this truck. They were convinced it was a lightning strike, and were preparing to open the wallet in an effort to get this truck back to running. With use of my #PicoScope, I was able to identify there was a high resistance fault on the CAN bus, interrupting normal communication. 30 minutes later, the concern was narrowed down to a single pin in the CAN bus. Using the proper terminal test probe for the vehicle, I went to inspect that pin, and found it to have NO terminal tension. Viola! Instead of spending thousands to repair this truck, the parts cost under $40. I love being able to narrow down the root cause of challenging concerns, and the right tool makes it so much easier! As more automated systems are introduced into vehicles to help people be better drivers, it will get harder to determine the root cause of road collisions. TRL has a specialist service for Police collision investigators to support them when faced with a crash scene involving vehicles with systems such as automated lane keep (ALKS) or intelligent speed assistance (ISA) which could be on concept vehicles being driven around the UK as part of trials. Partly funded by the DfT, TRL provides guidance on investigating whether a car accident was due to human error, or machine fault/failure. All learnings from these investigations will be shared across FCIUs in anticipation of automated systems being permitted on new vehicles sold in the UK.
