This past week, I had the pleasure to present our ongoing work "Are multi-stakeholders initiatives promoting decarbonization in the food supply chain?" at the 5th International Conference on Global Food Security in Leuven, Belgium. The work is done within the EU H2020 EU Enough Project and assesses perspectives of EU consumers about sustainable food. Are we following a promising path toward an effective sustainable transition? This week, I had the privilege of spending three days in Brussels, engaging with policymakers, grocery retailers, and key stakeholders dedicated to transitioning towards a more sustainable food system. A highlight for me was participating in the FOOD 2030 Networks Conference. There, I introduced the European Sustainable Food Coalition (ESFC) and delved into the future of food & beverage impact assessment and communication alongside important stakeholders from the European Commission, the UK's Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, ADEME, Colruyt Group, the World Resources Institute and Wageningen University & Research. My principal message emphasized the urgency of action. We cannot afford to wait for European Institutions to develop a European Sustainable Food Labelling Framework, a process that could take 5-10 years. Instead, it falls upon us — F&B impact assessment solution providers, grocery retailers, F&B brands, the scientific community and NGOs — to unite and establish a framework that not only aligns with the political will of European institutions but also lays the foundational groundwork for policymakers to build upon in the future. The broad support we've received for the ESFC is truly heartening. I am looking forward to collaborating with all involved to lay the necessary groundwork for transitioning our food system into one that can sustainably feed 10 billion people while respecting our planet's boundaries.
