The final day of delivery before half term and you never know what you’re going to learn whilst walking the campus. Welding lesson for our apprentices working within the marine industry that could’ve easily been mistaken for an art lesson. Some brilliant in-depth conversations on not just how to weld but where they may well end up welding and why. Students sketching and collaborating is so great to see. #welding #marine #cornwall

Monday morning rant: I have a former student, a journeyman CNC machinist, who is looking for a new role. He has 10+ years of experience. He can do set-ups, run multiple controls, on a variety of machine types (including 5-axis), and has substantial CAD/CAM experience. Additionally, he has maintained nearly perfect attendance. I try to be very optimistic about this industry that I love, but his experience has not been good - we have to get better! Five out of the six shops that he has applied to have committed at least TWO of the following errors: • Failed to respond to him when he called their main office, and they said they’d call him back • Failed to respond to an email through their own website’s “Careers” page • Forgot that he was coming for an interview • Did not know who within their company had scheduled the interview with him • Did not look at his resume before the interview • Had the wrong person interviewing him • Didn’t know if their company was hiring or not when he showed up for the interview • Promised to “make an offer by the end of the week” and then nothing came • Took him on a shop tour and called it an interview • Had no formal interview process or questions • Severely low-balled him on a job offer relative to his experience • Would not recognize his apprenticeship • Could not explain their benefits package • Could not describe how he could gain new skills and build a career at their company The sixth shop, according to him was “very professional, very organized, treated me with a lot of respect”. They had a plan for him, were able to explain how he would fit in with their team, and how he would personally grow if he came to work with them. Guess which one he is going to go to work for? If your shop is more like the five described above – please, please, PLEASE fix your hiring process. It makes it very difficult to recommend manufacturing to people when we can’t trust that they will be treated appropriately and professionally. If your shop is more like the sixth shop, THANK YOU and keep up the great work! Can anyone please reassure me that this percentage of negative hiring experiences (83%) is just an anomaly, and we aren’t actually this bad at it? Rant complete.

Listen to this - a bunch of first-semester students at Thaddeus Stevens and their excellent instructor, 👨🏭 James Stewart just proved what's possible when you're taught right from the start. Not only did these rookies tackle 3/8" open root groove welds (yeah, the tough ones), they straight-up aced their bend tests. No defects. Zero. Nada. Look, anyone who's ever picked up a welding gun knows that's no small thing. Most folks would be happy just to get their arc strikes looking decent in their first semester. But here's what gets me fired up - these students didn't just pass some classroom test. They crushed the same quality checks that keep bridge welders employed. The real-deal tests that make shop foremen nod their heads and reach for the hiring paperwork. The wild part? Few months back, these same students were probably wondering which end of the welding gun to hold. Now they're laying down perfect beads and getting ready to jump into sheet metal fab. Makes you wonder what else is possible with the right training, right? Hit up https://lnkd.in/gMzpcHBa if you're ready to write your own success story. Because whether you're 18 or 48, your next chapter could start with a perfect weld. Want in? Link's in the bio. Let's get you started. ⚡

Answering Common FAQs about Welding! What are the main types of welding techniques, and how do they differ? There are several types of welding: MIG (Metal Inert Gas) is known for its versatility and ease of use; TIG (Tungsten Inert Gas) offers precision for thinner materials; Stick (Shielded Metal Arc Welding) is robust and widely used for construction and repairs. What safety measures should welders prioritize? Prioritize safety by ensuring proper ventilation, wearing protective gear like helmets and gloves, and following safety protocols to prevent hazards such as burns and exposure to fumes. How does welding affect different metals, and which is best for certain projects? Welding affects metals differently; for instance, steel is strong and commonly used in construction, while aluminum is lightweight and ideal for aerospace applications. Choosing the right metal depends on the project's structural requirements and environmental conditions. What career paths are available in welding, and how can someone get started? Welding offers diverse career paths, from fabrication and pipeline construction to underwater welding and robotics. Start by gaining hands-on experience through school training, apprenticeships, or certification programs to build essential skills and expertise. Have any more questions? Continuing on with our apprentice theme, our team were talking about tools the other day. 🔌 When someone starts in the electrical world, they often don’t know what they should have for tools. 🤷Which often means they don’t start with anything. 💡 Here is a list of tools that we believe everyone should be starting to get together before day one in their new career. 👍 Things like Proving Unit, Test Probes, PPE & Torque Drivers, I believe the employer should provide but should always be carried. 🛠️ HANDTOOLS A sensible tool rucksack or wheeled box (always have a seat on the train) Set of VDE screwdrivers Side cutters (the ones that have the screw cutter and cable strippers are very handy) Pliers Longnose pliers Cable shears Pipe grips (large and small ideally) Hacksaw and junior hacksaw Set of metal files, square, round, half round. Tape measure, 5M+ Setsquare Sharpie Scribe Hammer (a baby hammer would be fine) Electricians knife Centre punch, manual or automatic Set of Allen keys Flush cutters (for cable ties) Selection of drill bits and screwdriver bits ⚡ POWER TOOLS Battery drill-driver Spare battery & charger #electricalcontractor #electricalwork
