On this Human Rights Day, the theme for 2024 is “Our rights, our future, right now.” As social workers we serve & support people, familes & communities across the globe. We are uniquely placed to ensure that everyone has information about their #humanrights in ways that make sense to them. The values, ethics & professional standards that underpin our professional practice are about championing human rights & challenging racist, discriminatory & oppressive practices. Those includes practices which abuse, dehumanise & other those who are often hidden away & forgotten about. Today there are still 2,050 autistic people and people with a learning disability that are in inpatient mental health hospitals in England with an average length of stay of 5 years. One way to use your professional power positively this #humanrightsday 💪🗣️ is to write to your local MP in support of @BASW 🏴 #HomesNotHospitals campaign to find out & challenge what is going on locally to support people to live an ordinary life in their own home & community. Use our campaign pack & template letter to get started Let us know if you receive a response👇 Homes Not Hospitals: https://lnkd.in/ghMXgJZ4

Our 13-year longitudinal research that looks at Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) participation reveals a growing trend in child-only TANF cases, where no adult recipients are involved: https://lnkd.in/gBQw-thy These children tend to remain on #TANF longer and are more consistent in receiving support compared to adult recipients. It's important that we gain a deeper understanding of how child-only cases are being leveraged across states and their impact on TANF participation. #ChildWellbeing

Read #WorldEBHCDay blog by Lieketseng Ned (PhD), Assoc/Prof of Disability and Rehabilitation Studies at Stellenbosch University, who explores the critical challenges, lessons learned, and the path forward to reaching an inclusive health care system for individuals living with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). "By improving data collection, coordinating cross-ministry efforts, and dedicating appropriate budgets, South Africa can take meaningful steps toward creating an inclusive and equitable health care system." 👉 https://ow.ly/GlWr50TCTIp #IntellectualAndDevelopmentalDisabilities #IDD

Between 1990 to 2013, studies that include people with profound autism have plummeted from 95% to 35%. This must change, and it can. We’re investing in inclusive research and working with scientists to ensure that people with profound autism are included in clinical research. Only then can targeted advocacy increase access to critically needed supports and services for this marginalized population. Join us in our mission to drive this essential change. https://ow.ly/m6aY50SlBfA

Such an alarming trend in research. How are we going to care for a vulnerable population with high needs when they are being marginalized by the society in charge of caring for them.

Sharing an important set of factoids I just learned at the National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO) conference. Only 15.8% of health departments involved in a study that examined CHAs and CHIPs developed from 2019 onward from accredited health departments included representation from a person with a disability on the CHIP Steering Committee. However, those health departments that did, were 3.2 times more likely to have at least one objective in the community health improvement plan that was intentionally inclusive of people with disabilities. That’s why we’re working to help health departments be more intentionally inclusive of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). They experience some of the largest health disparities and are unlikely to be part of community health improvement plans in an intentionally inclusive way. I know we can do better. Special Olympics can help with that. 😊

The needs of autistic people must be at the top of the next UK government’s agenda. The current model of autism assessment, diagnosis, and support in the UK is failing. With double the number of people that can fit in London’s Wembley Stadium waiting for an assessment, and more than 70% missing out on necessary support, we need urgent change. At Autistica, we're calling on the next UK Government to develop a national strategic initiative to fund targeted research and create better support systems. You can make a difference by asking local candidates how they plan to address this crisis. Find out who you can vote for and how to contact them: https://lnkd.in/g5JBhWK Together, we can make the needs of autistic people count in the #GeneralElection. #Election2024 #AutismAssessment
