Our team recently engaged with multiple departments of the City of Tamarac's government. We provide comprehensive training on Autism & Neurodiversity, city-wide accessibility and accommodations, and fostering a strengths-based community. It was a valuable opportunity to highlight the importance of building inclusive cities. We are excited to continue offering training and support as Tamarac progresses towards becoming an Autism Inclusive City through HAAPE. Stay tuned and follow our journey! Alternative Text: The background of the image is a green-to-light-green gradient (top) and white (bottom). Toward the top of that image is a section of bold white text that reads, "NCS Highlight". Below that is a light gray button-shaped section containing the NCS and Tamarac logos. Lastly, toward the center and bottom center of the image is a rectangular picture with a green outline that was taken during the NCS' virtual training with Tamarac. The picture contains the cover page of the PowerPoint, a picture of Silvia, and a conference room where Tamarac officials are sat. . . . . /#NeuroConsultingSolutions #NCS #neurodiverse #neurodivergent #neurodiversity #neurodiversidad #neurodivergence #ally #supporter #advocate #awareness #acceptance #neurodiversityawareness #neurodiversityacceptance #inclusive #inclusion #inclusivity #diverse #accessible #accessibility #inclusivecity #cityleadership #tamarac #tamaraccity #inclusiveinitiative

"There's been study after study that has shown that people do better academically, they do better with self-care, they have better overall outcomes, they're healthier and happier when they're in a community versus an institution." Take some time out of your day to watch this brief documentary (20 minutes) that sheds light on the systemic issues in Illinois related to housing and programming for individuals with disabilities and complex needs. This is NOT a new issue, and I am deeply grateful that there is more attention on this to create awareness and meaningful change. Even just implementing ASL training for staff providing support services to disabled folks will allow for more person-centered care and opportunities (see Ed's story). If you are interested in learning more about -finding a network -gathering information and receiving a roadmap to create inclusive community housing -finding person-centered services for disabled individuals residing in the community, reach out to Center for Independent Futures! https://lnkd.in/grsCTihR

#WorldAutismAwarenessDay is a moment to recognize and celebrate the important contributions of autistic people in every country and community. But around the world, they continue to confront barriers to their fundamental rights to education, employment and social inclusion. Governments must invest in stronger community support systems, inclusive education and training programmes, and accessible and technology-based solutions to enable people with autism to enjoy the same rights as others. Scaling-up support and investment in countries and communities requires working hand-in-hand with persons with autism and their allies. Today and every day, let’s unite to realize their rights, and ensure an inclusive and accessible world for all.

Dr Ned Chandler-Mather and I, alongside Kerry Russell and Tim Spall from Beyond the Pale Indigenous Corporation, had the privilege of presenting our latest work at the 2nd National Youth Justice Forum in Brisbane. Our presentation, titled: Including the Voices of First Nation Peoples in a ‘Framework and Practice Standards for Young People with Neurodevelopmental Disabilities in Youth Justice’: A Successful Start and a Future Challenge, addressed the critical issue of the overrepresentation of young First Nations people with neurodevelopmental disabilities in the youth justice system, particularly focusing on Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD). We shared insights from our extensive consultations and collaborative efforts in developing a new Framework and Practice Standards, emphasising the integration of First Nations perspectives. Key takeaways from consultations with community, peak bodies and legal services included: (i) a focus on relationship building that was culturally informed and respectful (ii) an understanding of the First Nations world view of disability as "difference” rather than deficit (iii) the right for equitable access to assessment, diagnosis, and support (iv) an acknowledgement of the impact of intergenerational trauma (v) ensuring the young person provides informed consent around information sharing (vi) involvement of community and families in supporting young people. While the Framework represents a significant first step, the real challenge lies ahead: assessing its impact on practice, understanding, and policy changes within the youth justice system. #YouthJustice #FirstNationsVoices #NeurodevelopmentalDisabilities #FASD

All children deserve access to the conditions and opportunities needed to thrive, including: A. Unbiased accessible healthcare B. High-quality learning opportunities C. Safe, toxin-free communities D. Stable housing E. Access to nutritious meals F. Secure, warm, available, and loving caregivers. [at the very least] Historic and contemporary injustices in US society have created inequities in opportunity and access to resources for Black, Latine, Asian, American Indian and Alaska Native, and other children of color, children with disabilities, children in poverty, and other marginalized children; these have contributed to stark disparities across #ChildDevelopment outcomes. This Element overviews inequities in economic, educational, and health systems through historical and contemporary perspectives and describes how these inequities impact children and families. Solutions to address these inequities are considered for a fairer US society, starting with its youngest residents, where all families have what they need to thrive. This title is also available as #OpenAccess on Cambridge Core. https://lnkd.in/ey7SRvNz

Despite the known benefit of cultural responsiveness, policymakers continue to rigidly favor empirical “evidence-based” programs (EBPs), even without evidence they meet the needs of people of diverse cultures. This overreliance on EBPs obstructs the provision of culturally responsive services, both because being approved as an EBP costs time and money that small community organizations don’t have and because policymakers do not accept the community-defined evidence providers do have. For families and communities of color who are already underserved by public services, the lack of support for culturally affirming resources is of critical concern. Families and communities deserve more access to services that meet their needs, not less. Policymakers must work with community-based providers and other community members to identify what services are benefiting families and how to better support them, including through creating evidence criteria that better capture outcomes that communities value. 🌍 With my background at the intersection of disability, ethnicity, and health, I've explored in-depth how systemic barriers and social determinants shape health outcomes. My recent commentary, "Intersectionality, Disability, and Health," unpacks these issues and suggests pathways for change. 📖 [Read my article here](https://lnkd.in/eQE2DwfW). 📑 Leveraging my marketing skills in strategic communication and data analysis, I am transitioning into research and policy roles where I can help influence meaningful reforms. I am keen to contribute to projects that aim to dismantle health inequities and ensure that healthcare systems are inclusive and effective for all. I'm highly creative, and enjoy creating visually appealing reports and storytelling. 🔍 I am looking for opportunities that align with my expertise and values. If you are involved in research or policy initiatives that focus on health equity, other opportunities in different fields, the charity/non-profit sector or know of potential collaborations, I would appreciate the opportunity to discuss how my background and skills could contribute. ✨ Please feel free to connect with me here on LinkedIn or direct message me to discuss potential partnerships or roles. ✨ #HealthEquity #DisabilityRights #PolicyResearch #CareerTransition #SeekingOpportunities #Research #UK
