As a project management student in a Nigerian university, I have often found myself frustrated by the gap between what we are taught in class and what I see when taking online courses. The differences can be overwhelming. So, this past semester, I decided to take a different approach, applying everything my lecturers taught to my specific niche in project management. During my studies last semester, one topic stood out: Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA). It was introduced by one of my lecturers, and it immediately sparked my curiosity. I decided to dig deeper into a closely related concept—ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) analysis. ESG analysis is becoming an important tool for businesses, especially in today’s world where sustainability and responsibility are more than just buzzwords. It offers a framework to evaluate how companies operate, not just in terms of profits, but in their broader impact on the environment, society, and their internal governance structures. For product managers, understanding ESG is essential. On the environmental side, it encourages us to think about the entire lifecycle of a product using sustainable materials, improving energy efficiency, and reducing waste. Social considerations push us to ensure fairness, promote diversity, and design products that are inclusive and accessible to all. Governance ensures we have clear processes, ethical sourcing, and accountability measures in place. Incorporating ESG principles into product management isn’t just about ticking boxes. It’s about creating products that are responsible, sustainable, and beneficial for both businesses and the world at large. This journey into ESG has opened my eyes to the importance of building not just profitable products, but ethical ones that align with global sustainability goals. I'm excited to share that I have completed my MSc in Project Management from the University of Salford. My disseration was titled "The Role of Sustainable Practices in Project Management: An Analysis of its Impact on Project Success and Stakeholder Satisfaction". Through an extensive literature review, data analysis, case studies and industry reports, my research provides empirical evidence on the benefits of integrating sustainability into project management, highlighting the importance of embedding sustainability into project management processes to deliver optimal outcomes for organizations, stakeholders and society.
