Education that matters 💚 The Green Academy, in collaboration with a new partnership with the Church of Denmark, is set to have the European Platform for Urban Greening partners collaborate on creating a customized training program for landscapers and gardeners responsible for maintaining the grounds and cemeteries owned by the Church. The training will place a significant emphasis on biodiversity. Jane Thomsen from Syddjurs Provsti "emphasizes the importance of this new education, stating that cemeteries and churches, with their long-established traditions, need to align with biodiversity, green transition, and development due to various ongoing activities in these spaces." 🟣 Kick off meeting in Manresa! RECREATE project is a 4 year Horizon Europe project coordinated by Eurecat that aims to improve the resilience of water supplies and protects the status of natural water resources by facilitating the assessment and inclusion of Alternative Water Resources (AWR) in water management planning for water-scarce regions. The project will produce an open-access repository compiling existing knowledge and data on the cost efficiency, climate change adaptation and mitigation potential, regulatory framework, environmental, and health impact of different technological and water management alternatives for AWR use. This repository will be encoded as an independent module into a Digital Decision Support Framework that, together with three additional modules, will be used for co-creating adaptative pathways for regional water management. RECREATE will be demonstrated in four regional case studies covering different bio-regions (Mediterranean, Continental, and Atlantic), and water contexts. We coordinate RECREATE through our Water, Air and Soil Unit (WAS). The Applied Artificial Intelligence Unit (AAI) leads the design of the RECREATE_WT digital decision-making tool. Today, I completed the "Nature's Crown Jewels" training on IUCN’s Academy platform, an introductory training to Natural World Heritage. The training covers all the key concepts you need to know, the roles of the various actors in the world heritage inscription and reporting process, and it also shows you management effectiveness, and the monitoring and tracking of these roles. Although it is an introductory training but to me, it was both informative and, at majority of the time, concerning. Sharing here some of the points that really stuck with me: 1. Despite there being 1,154 World Heritage sites globally, Arab states only have eight on the list. Worth exploring and expanding. 2. Advisory bodies like IUCN, ICOMOS, and ICCROM submit state of conservation reports to the World Heritage Committee, which then decides on necessary actions for each site. Sites in danger are added to the "World Heritage in Danger" list, and in some cases, are removed entirely. I wonder if this might apply to Iraq’s Marshes—I'll need to check recent reports. 3. The training links the role of GIS in tracking threats to sites, such as deforestation and infrastructure development. 4. Climate change remains the top threat to natural heritage. One fact that struck me was that, although forest ecosystems sequester 190 million tonnes of CO2 annually—nearly half of the UK’s fossil fuel emissions—at least 10 natural heritage sites have been net carbon emitters over the past 20 years, according to a study by UNESCO and IUCN. The course was really interesting and eye-opening and a reminder of the urgent work needed to protect these sites.

🌍 Empowering Conservationists Worldwide 🌱 When we first started out, we mainly trained conservationists in the UK. Fast forward to today, and I’m proud to share that we’re now reaching and supporting incredible conservationists all over the world. This past year, we’ve made a big push to support conservationists in Africa, and the impact has been inspiring. Our updated map now shows the amazing individuals we’ve certified with key conservation skills—spanning across the continent and making a tangible difference for nature. But our journey doesn’t stop here. One of our biggest challenges is reaching conservationists in regions where different languages are spoken, such as French, Spanish, and Portuguese. These geographies remain underserved, but they’re next on our list. We’re committed to making our training, best practices, and resources accessible to even more conservationists globally, so they too can lead efforts to restore and protect our planet. Together, we’re building a movement where everyone, everywhere, has the knowledge, skills, and network they need to make a meaningful impact for nature. 🌿 https://lnkd.in/ewU3itQK #Conservation #GlobalImpact #TrainingLeaders #WildlifeConservation #Sustainability #WildTeam
