🌱 Masterclass Takeaways: Leading with Regeneration in Finance (Tom Chi) 🌍 Yesterday's session with Tom Chi was nothing short of inspiring. Here are the highlights that reshaped how we can think about investing for a regenerative future: 💡 Rethinking Scale and Impact: Instead of solving one problem at a time, why not tackle 50 simultaneously? Tom Chi shared his journey of creating a venture capital firm that aims to do just that, focusing on deep tech, unit economics, and environmental economics. The goal? To drive rapid transformation, not just incremental improvements. 📈 Shifting from Extraction to Contribution: The lesson from nature is clear: it’s not about how much we consume, but how we participate. Ants, for example, consume 10x more food than humans yet enrich their ecosystems. The challenge for us is to create a net positive civilization, where human activities enhance, rather than deplete, natural systems. 🔍 Investing in Catalysts for Change: Chi’s approach is rooted in investing in innovations that cause disruptive shifts in industries. Take textile dyeing, for example. His firm backs technologies that reduce water usage and lower costs by a factor of three, transforming an industry responsible for major environmental damage. ⚙️ The Investment Triangle: Chi’s firm uses a unique triangle to evaluate investments: Deep Tech - Reinventing industries with groundbreaking innovations. Unit Economics - Aiming for a 3x improvement in margins. Environmental Economics - Selecting projects that drastically reduce environmental impact. 🌍 A Net Positive Relationship with Nature: To achieve a regenerative future, we need to upgrade our relationship with the fundamental elements of nature: water, soil, biodiversity, and air. It’s about aligning our technologies and investments with the physical world’s principles. 🚀 The Vision: From autonomous vehicles that reduce the need for parking lots (and free up space for green areas) to textiles that consume less water, Tom Chi’s vision is a future where human activities are a catalyst for ecological regeneration. Let’s rethink our role in the world and strive for a civilization that gives back more than it takes. 🌿 #Regeneration #SustainableFinance #DeepTech #EnvironmentalEconomics #CircularEconomy #TomChi #ClimateAction #NetPositive

In just a glorious week from today, at 6 pm UTC +10, THRIVE proudly presents its April webinar focusing on SDG13: Climate Action. Bringing us insight is Simone Grasso, a sustainability-driven business developer and circular economy lecturer. Grasso holds a dual degree in economics, management, and policies for global challenges, specialising in green economy and sustainability, with honours from the University of Ferrara and Southern Denmark University. Throughout his career, he has actively promoted circular economy principles by leading the development of the green-tech startup Cyrkl in Italy for 2.5 years. He now focuses on educating young students and professionals to drive progress and innovation in sustainability. Simone's presentation focuses on the circular economy, aligning with one of THRIVE's 12 Foundational Focus Factors, the Regenerative Economy. These economies diverge significantly from our current economy, the linear model. The linear model, as its name suggests, is simply linear: take, make, break, and toss away. However, the linear economy is a mistake. Join us to learn more about transitioning towards a circular and then regenerative economy, both as individuals and communities. Day: Tuesday Date: 16 April 2024 Time: 6 pm UTC +10 Visit the link below for further information: Link: https://lnkd.in/gRnwa9Hc #THRIVEWebinar #SDG13 #ClimateAction #CircularEconomy #RegenerativeEconomy #Sustainability #CircularEconomyEducation #SustainableDevelopment #ClimateActionNow

A really really interesting policy brief highlighting the need for exnovation as a complement to innovation https://lnkd.in/exUfp8Ht My take away 👉 “Exnovation refers to the active unmaking of unsustainable socio-technical configurations. Unsustainable configurations may correspond to incumbent technologies, broader mature regimes, or new negative trends.”(p2) 👉“Exnovation policies are needed because the implementation of innovations (or alternatives to existing systems) does notautomatically displace their less sustainable equivalent modes. » (p4) 👉« Political and economic leaders as well as ordinary citizens [...] tend to idealise sustainable technological innovations or even grassroot-based social innovations as the high road to transitions.” (p7) 👉“What matters is to collectively recognise, debate, and imagine future actions which would be specifically targeting unsustainability in sociotechnical systems.” (p7) 👉“exnovation policies are not virtuous by definition either; they must be well designed . »(p4) > need to think and plan 👉“Exnovation oriented policy interventions go beyond imagining purposeful decline and need to address its broader repercussions (aftercare, multiple-regime interactions, unjust losses). » (p5) More detailed recommendations p7-10 especially on “Guarantee Just exnovation” (p9-10)
[𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐜 𝐯𝐚𝐥𝐮𝐞 𝐨𝐟 “𝐞𝐱𝐧𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧” 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐬𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐁𝐫𝐮𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐬 𝐂𝐚𝐩𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐑𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐨𝐧 (𝐁𝐂𝐑)?] 💡📄 During their projects, researchers funded by the 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐂𝐨-𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐦𝐦𝐞𝐬 of Innoviris had the opportunity to write a policy brief to encourage measures in their research domain. In the following weeks, we will share them on this page. 🔎 The second project is 𝐆𝐎𝐒𝐄𝐓𝐄, dealing with exnovation for sustainability transition strategies in Brussels. 🔄 ● Discover their policy recommendations 👇 https://lnkd.in/ejaXMAtD 📰 Conclusions: Exnovation and innovation need to be actively thought of as the two faces of our ongoing and future sustainability transitions. Innovation allows for patterns of creation of sustainability-oriented technology and of grassroots alternatives. However, the eclosion of innovation-guided trajectories can evolve without leading to the decline or “creative destruction” of unsustainable orders. What is more, even under the hypothesis that sustainability-oriented innovations could break through by spontaneously “destroying” the unsustainable old, there is no guarantee that these processes per se will prevent socially unacceptable losses. Exnovation does not take for granted the automaticity of innovation as a dual process of creative destruction as formulated by Joseph Schumpeter some 80 years ago. Indeed, in the context of serious environmental and socio-political threats, the strategic relevance of exnovation lies in its specific and novel way of envisioning complex sociotechnical trajectories of decline and their related losses or indirect unwanted effects. Those are not conceived as the “destroying” effects of competition, but as necessary objects of responsible governance efforts and thus a major matter of concern for policy, politics, and the socially embedded economy. GOSETE has been a pioneering project in this direction and has resulted in three concrete policy recommendations for the RBC. ℹ️ GOSETE project – (Governance of the Sustainable Economy Transition; Challenges of Exnovation) 🔸 ULB researchers: Wouter Achten, Tom Bauler, Solene Sureau 🔹 Partner researcher: Régine Feltkamp (VUB) 🔸 End date: 31/12/2022 🔹 KTO advisor: Stéphanie Nemeghaire #Brussels #exnovation #innovation #sustainability #economy Université libre de Bruxelles

🌱 I am thrilled to officially embark on a research journey into leadership for regenerative futures! What started as a seed of an idea over a year ago, nurtured with the invaluable support of Kim Aplonia Poldner, is now taking roots and beginning to grow. Together with Rolien Blanken, Bas van den Berg, Lonneke Frie PhD, and Naomi van Stapele, PhD, we are diving into a powerful question: How do professionals in management position within the education sector navigate unsustainable systems after experiencing their own consciousness shift? We're starting by exploring these consciousness shifts — pivotal moments (or life phases) when an individual’s worldview deepens and expands. Our goal is to understand how these changes influence their approach to existing systems and how they might work to transform the systems from within. We are creating a collection of stories to take their own life. Soon, we’ll be sharing how you can get involved in this exciting research! 🌿 In parallel, I continue working with the strategy team at De Haagse Hogeschool / The Hague University of Applied Sciences, though I’m transitioning to focus more on this meaningful research. The new work-dynamic encourages me to be less in doing myself and rather keep planting seeds of system transition within the organisation. Glad to be guided by the wisdom of fabulous mentor Judit Sáez Gonzálvez and the regenerative practice I am embracing. Excited to co-create pathways for regenerative futures—by storytelling and reconnecting to what truly sustains us! ✨ Centre of Expertise Mission Zero, De Haagse Hogeschool and Kenniscentrum Global & Inclusive Learning #RegenerativeLeadership #HigherEducation #ConsciousnessShift #CollectiveTransformation
