Collaboration is key to driving sustainability forward. Our valued members Wheatley Group - Scotland's leading housing, care, and property management organisation - and Glasgow Caledonian University, recently joined forces to drive sustainability with innovative research and knowledge sharing. Abisola Ijaodola a Glasgow Caledonian University master's student, in Climate Justice interviewed Wheatley Home tenants, Scotland’s largest registered social landlord, to gather opinions on Wheatley’s significant investment in sustainable projects and technologies. Gathering feedback on projects like Connected Response, which boosts energy efficiency in homes and cuts costs. Tenants are playing a crucial role in shaping sustainable housing solutions that truly meet community needs. This partnership goes beyond research – it's about inspiring change. Peter Osborne, Wheatley Group's Sustainability Officer, recently shared his expertise at Glasgow Caledonian University, where he raised awareness about the technologies employed, sustainability targets, and relevant government policies helping bridge the gap between industry and academia. The power of networking through BITC has made all of this possible, creating connections that spark innovation and drive progress. It's a testament to what can be achieved when organisations, universities, and communities unite with a shared goal. Are you ready to be part of this transformative journey? By joining our growing network, you too can collaborate with industry leaders, access cutting-edge research, and contribute directly to building a sustainable future for Scotland. Center for Sustainable Development at Brookings: Playbook, Dec 2024 1️⃣ While the initial United Nations resolution in 2015 outlining the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) gave little focus to the role of local governments and institutions, subsequent Global Sustainable Development Reports in 2019 and 2023 emphasized the crucial role of local and subnational actions in achieving these goals. Efforts have centered on empowering municipal and subnational governments, yet addressing the interconnected challenges of multiple SDGs requires a comprehensive "whole-of-society" approach involving not only governments but also businesses, philanthropies, academia, and civil society. 2️⃣ Approaching the milestone of the 10-year mark for the SDGs, local-level policies, initiatives, and collaborative endeavors have played a significant role in implementation. Local communities are tackling issues such as extreme weather, environmental conservation, housing, public health, and economic development, making them pivotal in addressing the environmental, social, and economic challenges inherent in the SDGs. 3️⃣ This report explores the potential of 17 Rooms as a tool to support community foundations (CFs) in advancing a wide array of environmental, social, and economic priorities aligned with the SDGs. While the SDGs offer a framework for comprehensive local-level actions, many CFs encounter challenges in sustaining the breadth and depth of these efforts. Drawing from case studies in five communities, the report demonstrates how 17 Rooms can: - Establish a shared language for community-wide actions - Highlight and unite diverse community assets - Translate strategic plans into actionable steps - Foster community-level skills - Link projects to broader progress within the population 4️⃣ Additionally, the report includes a practical playbook to assist CF leaders in utilizing 17 Rooms as a catalyst for more impactful, community-scale leadership in sustainable development initiatives. Today, I launch The Strathclyde Institute for Sustainable Communities (SISC), alongside Jen Roberts and Iain Cairns. This has been years in the making and a real milestone, not just for my own career, but for University of Strathclyde. Communities are critical to the success of a sustainability transition. They will not only be at the sharp end of the transformation but they also have the power to frustrate or catalyse this change. Even so, they remain situated at the fringes of plans to deliver net-zero rather than at the heart of decision making. SISC plugs a much needed hole in the research and policy landscape; spotlighting the potential role communities could play in accelerating sustainable development. It highlights the challenges communities face and how we can unlock their latent passion, resources and experience to help enrich and empower citizens. Most importantly it explores just transition pathways that serve to better integrate grassroots action and decision making with the top-down decentralised governance structures that pervade our economy and society today. In short, SISC aims to unlock grassroots action for a more sustainable future. We look forward to working collaboratively and inclusively with stakeholders from all sectors and countries to achieve this. In the meantime, please follow The Strathclyde Institute for Sustainable Communities (SISC) for news and updates. We’ll also be spotlighting the launch on the next episode of Local Zero Podcast. The full press release is here: https://lnkd.in/exGTZxkU Website here: https://lnkd.in/erC2iQup Thank you for your support and we look forward to collaborating with you on the future. #communities #sustainability #netzero #justtransition
