MindAffect 𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐭𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡 𝐚 𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧-𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐮𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐚𝐜𝐞 MindAffect, a Dutch medical technology startup, has raised €1.1 million to bring its hearing diagnostic technology to market. It is a spinout of Radboud University that has developed a patented brain-computer interface (BCI) technology that diagnoses hearing impairment from brain signals. The company aims to provide a fairer testing solution specifically designed for patients who find it difficult to be tested, such as children, the elderly and people with disabilities. MindAffect has combined neurobiology, BCI technology and artificial intelligence to develop Aurora, a non-responsive hearing diagnostic system that relies on stimuli and brain signals. Aurora uses a headband that patients wear while listening to quiet chirping and watching videos without sound for less than 10 minutes. The system reads brain signals and combines the information with audiometric threshold tests of air and bone conduction to make a diagnosis. MindAffect plans to launch Aurora next year. The company is also working on vision diagnostics for children, as well as a solution for monitoring work-related stress in challenging visual or auditory environments. #archtown #innovations #startup #medicine #mindaffect

🌟 Exciting Collaboration Spotlight! 🌟 At SpeechTherapyPD.com, we've had the honor of collaborating with many esteemed professionals in our field. One of the most influential is Char Boshart, M.A., CCC-SLP, a renowned SLP and educator whose practical, evidence-based strategies have profoundly impacted many other SLPs. Char’s dedication to bridging the gap between research and real-world application aligns perfectly with our mission at SpeechTherapyPD.com. Here are some key insights and tips inspired by her work that can help you enhance your practice: 🔹 Engaging Reluctant Clients Creating intrigue and making sessions engaging is essential. Use a mirror to demonstrate speech sounds or tasks yourself and add fun elements like flavored sprays on therapy tools. Persistence and creativity can make a significant difference! 🔹 Ensuring Proper Tongue Placement Accurate tongue placement is critical for clear speech sounds. For sounds like "S" and "SH," anchor the sides of the tongue on the insides of the top back teeth. Use a child-sized tongue depressor to help children feel the correct placement, providing a stable base for proper tongue movement. 🔹 Addressing Difficulty with Tongue Elevation Some children struggle with elevating the front part of the tongue for sounds like "L." Use a Toothette or oral swab with flavored spray to make it inviting. Place it on the front part of the tongue and encourage the child to bite and squeeze up, emphasizing front tongue movement and muscle development. 🔹 Achieving the Perfect /r/ Sound Getting a good /r/ sound can be challenging. For a bunched /r/, anchor the back corners of the tongue on the top back teeth. Contract and retract the tongue to create a resonance chamber in the pharynx. Proper placement and muscle tension are crucial for a clear /r/ sound. 🔹 Tips for New SLPs Welcome to the field! Remember, it’s a continuous learning curve. Engage with other SLPs, take courses, and be open to learning on the job. Embrace the ever-evolving nature of speech pathology and enjoy the process of growth and discovery. At SpeechTherapyPD.com, we're committed to providing SLPs with evidence-based strategies that can be immediately implemented in therapy sessions. Explore our resources and join us in making a difference in the lives of those we serve. #SLP #SpeechTherapy #ProfessionalDevelopment #EvidenceBasedPractice #CharBoshart #SpeechTherapyPD

Meet Angelica Bernabé, psychologist and SLP student, an extraordinary ordinary SLP who stutters! Angelica endured many ineffective speech therapy approaches as a child, and that experience has influenced every aspect of her approach today. As an SLP graduate student and soon-to-be doctoral student in the field of stuttering, Angelica has been at the forefront of innovation in stuttering research and therapy approaches. But none of it would be possible if she hadn’t been a person who stutters. “The unconventional methods I encountered in the past, such as placing objects in my mouth to try to ‘cure me’, highlighted the importance of staying informed and adopting evidence-based practices. This led me to engage in constant training and education, ensuring that my current therapeutic approach is based on research and is focused on the specific needs of each individual.” —- “Extraordinary Ordinary SLPs Who Stutter" is an initiative dedicated to celebrating the inspiring lives and professional journeys of SLPs who stutter. These stories resonate deeply, offering connection and encouragement within the stuttering community. We will be featuring SLPs who stutter as we lead up to National Stuttering Awareness Week (May 13-19). Plus, we’ll be holding a special event that week to highlight the value stuttered voices have brought to the field of speech-language pathology. We’ll be giving all the details to our newsletter subscribers first, so don’t forget to sign up for our mailing list today!
