What is basic research in the area of digitalization? how do you select a timely research topic? what is the scale, and level of urgency of your research problem, and how can you frame your research to contribute to an existing body of research? This was a set of questions I discussed with our wonderful group of PhD students in informatics here at Umeå University last week. It is also something I focus on in my ongoing book project on applied and basic research. How do you frame your research? and to what extent is your research applied or basic? empirical or theoretical? short-term, or long-term?

A question for QUT (Queensland University of Technology) and Griffith University. How does someone become and expert when there are no experts to guide their research? Hitting road block after road block in my quest to undertake PhD research.

Really interesting article by Colin contributing to the discussions on the curriculum review of sciences. It explores how the role of knowledge in CfE is vague especially for novice teachers and links to research that states that skills are the application of knowledge. Then explores writing that conceptual knowledge is is not leaner well during practical work and that explicit instruction that is responsive, interactive, dynamic and inclusive is the most effective way for novices to learn. In my role as an IoP physics teacher coach I can help with the professional learning that is necessary to ensure experience and novice teachers know the pedagogical approaches and pedagogical content knowledge to carry out effective explicit instruction.

We all know that involving students in undergraduate research is a high impact practice. Today, I was impressed by the sophistication of the studies being conducted at SIUE, sometimes by first-year college students. The cross-disciplinary collaborations were also noteworthy, such as the ones between computer science and biological sciences. I wish I could tell you more, but you can check out the amazing work being done by these students and faculty at https://www.siue.edu/urca/. Truly impressive!
