🌞 ¡Gracias, Sevilla 2024! 🌞 I had the privilege of presenting my research on Sustainability Leadership at the 17th annual International Conference of Education, Research, and Innovation (ICERI) in Seville, Spain. This esteemed conference brought together over 870 delegates from more than 70 countries, fostering a vibrant exchange of ideas and advancements in education and research. 🎓 My presentation focused on Cultivating Sustainable Leaders: Transformative Learning for Strategic Sustainability Management. The #EUA2024AnnualConf starting with a session on leadership and integrity. Former European University Association president Michael Murphy led through a very inspiring discussion with Luciana Vaccaro and Santiago Iniguez . They explored how university leaders can navigate today's complex landscape with integrity and upholding strong ethical values. Some key Takeaways: Philosophy as a compass: Grounding decisions in core principles and values, philosophy can offer a strong backbone to navigate through difficult choices. Mission with integrity: Leaders must passionately convey their institution's mission while staying true to its values. Humility for Motivation: Leaders who lead with humility and approachability inspire others. Integrity - A Learned Skill: The panel agreed that integrity can be taught and learned and should be incorporated into educational or leadership programs. Mentorship Matters: While 140 attendees saw mentorship as valuable, only 40 reported having a mentor. Diversity of Integrity: Audience responses highlighted the multifaceted nature of key characteristics of a leader with integrity, encompassing transparency, responsibility, empathy, authenticity, and resilience. In academia, we celebrate research excellence, but are we truly preparing our researchers to lead? This article provides a firsthand account of a researcher who found themselves in a leadership position for which they were not prepared. Their experience offers valuable lessons—like removing pressure to publish from their team by rewarding quality over quantity when it comes to research, supporting your team, communicating expectations of the lab to be successful, seeking feedback, and passing on your leadership wisdom. But leadership goes beyond publications and lab operations—it’s about vision, collaboration, and driving institutional progress. Here’s how we can better support our future academic leaders: 1️⃣ Expand Training: Leadership isn’t innate; it’s cultivated. We need to offer tailored leadership development programs that go beyond traditional research training and align with goals of the lab. 2️⃣ Foster Collaboration: Encourage interdisciplinary projects that require leadership and teamwork, helping researchers build crucial soft skills. 3️⃣ Mentorship Matters: Provide access to a diverse group of mentors who can guide researchers on their leadership journey, offering insights from their own experiences.
