Using the {patchwork} package, I combined a plot for women, age labels, and a plot for men to make one population pyramid for Benton County, Oregon. It's #NationalSeniorCitizensDay and while it doesn't come as any surprise that Florida would have many counties with a high percentage of 65+ population, I was somewhat surprised that almost every state seems to have counties where the elderly congregate and others where they don't. In particular, counties in western states skew to the extremes (Notice Texas and the Dakotas with many dark red and dark blue counties). In contrast, there is only a narrow swath of counties between the Mississippi River and the western edge of the Appalachians (roughly from New Orleans to Detroit) where the elderly population remains fairly close to the national average. Also, check out the stark North/South divides of the elderly in Idaho and Michigan!

The Southeast and Southwest regions of the U.S. continue their dominance for in-migration. Between 2022 and 2023, the so-called Sun Belt accounted for 89 of the 100 fastest-growing counties in the nation.   North Carolina scored six counties in the top 100. Population estimates are available for the nation, states, metropolitan and micropolitan statistical areas, counties, incorporated places and minor civil divisions, and Puerto Rico and its municipios. In addition, housing unit estimates are available for the nation, states and counties.

While population growth is often at the top of issues identified in the Utah Foundation’s open-ended survey, it tends to rank lower when Utah voters start prioritizing issues. The Utah Foundation asked about population growth in four of the five past surveys, but it has not ranked among the top 10 since 2008. After analyzing the 2024 open-ended preliminary survey responses, the Utah Foundation again modified the question.
