This study on battery aging revealed several key findings: Battery Longevity: Electric vehicle batteries maintain a state of health (SoH) above 90% even after 100,000 kilometers and remain stable up to 300,000 kilometers, contradicting common myths about rapid degradation. Real-World Data: The study utilized data from over 7,000 vehicles, showing that actual battery capacity is maintained longer than laboratory predictions, especially at high mileages. Factors Affecting Aging: Temperature and state of charge significantly impact battery aging. What are solid-state batteries? Solid-state batteries replace the liquid or gel-like electrolyte in conventional lithium-ion batteries with a solid substance. This results in higher energy density, improved safety and potentially faster charging times. Why is this important? Higher energy density: Solid-state batteries can store more energy, which could significantly extend the range of electric vehicles. Safer: As no flammable liquid electrolytes are used, there is less risk of fires and explosions. LFP Batteries Can See Upto 70% Increase In Lifespan Via A New Method A scientific paper published in Joule indicates a relatively simple technique to boost the lifespan of LFP batteries by up to a maximum of 70%. A recent study by SLAC-Stanford Battery Center, funded by Toyota, claims that charging LFP batteries for the very first time at unusually high speeds extends their lifespan by an average of 50% and up to a maximum of 70%. The details of the entire experiment surfaced in the scientific paper in Joule. The scientists have found a rather innovative way to boost battery health and minimize degradation. We know that extensive R&D work has been going on behind the scenes in the last few years to make future EVs way better than the existing ones. In fact, a recent study, funded by Tesla, found that consistently using LFP batteries at a higher state of charge negatively affects battery health and degradation.
