Clay remains a favorite for the form-finding process, but there are times when a sturdier option is needed. That's where materials like hardboard (PU-foam) and close contour paste (epoxy-based) become invaluable. In this video, you'll see the DT Mill effortlessly cutting through hardboard at an impressive speed of up to 40m/min. The hardboard features a density of 0.6g/cm³, while the paste material comes in slightly denser at 0.75g/cm³. Both materials are milled with precision using a 20mm ball cutter and an 8mm sidestep. When designing a structural silicone glazing #SSG bite, we can’t overlook that bond between the #2 & #3 surfaces via the IGU spacer system.. What is an SSG (structural silicone glazing joint)? In short – a load bearing bond between the glass and metal frame – in simpler terms, the glue holding the glass back to the structural framing of the glazing system. To calculate the min. bite per the equation below, we must account for the following variables: ▪️Design windload – higher the wind load & the larger the pane of glass, the greater the min. required bite dimension (letter h in the bottom right) ▪️Sealant design stress – max allowable stress (pascals or kilopascals) for the specific sealant type you are using. ▪️Longest short span – if we have a rectangular shaped piece of glass, we use the shorter of the 2 dimensions (length vs width of glass). As you can see in the photo below, accounts for the width/depth of the IGU perimeter sealant joint. For this assembly to work effectively, this joint is critical not only for keeping the IGU watertight, but for keeping the glazing structurally intact.
