3 NJ Children’s Hospitals Among Nation’s Best: U.S. News Rankings Michelle Rotuno-Johnson Three children’s hospitals in New Jersey have been named among the best in the country in a new U.S. News & World Report ranking that for the first time includes pediatric and adolescent behavioral health specialty rankings. Two of these hospitals were ranked among the top 50 nationally for behavioral health services in the 2024-2025 Best Children’s Hospitals rankings. Here’s how New Jersey hospitals performed. Hackensack Meridian Health JM Sanzari (Hackensack) and K Hovnanian Children's Hospitals (Neptune) were ranked together as the No. 1 children's hospital in the Garden State, and among the top hospitals for behavioral health services. Among the specialties ranked, these hospitals also ranked at No. 45 for Diabetes and Endocrinology, and No. 49 for Urology. The Bristol-Myers Squibb Children's Hospital at RWJ University Hospital (New Brunswick) was ranked as the No. 2. children's hospital in New Jersey, and for two specialties — coming in at No. 47 for Orthopedics, and No. 35 for Urology. The hospitals were evaluated across 11 pediatric specialties.

It’s with great sadness that we acknowledge the passing of Dr. Akira Endo at the age of 90. Dr. Endo’s pioneering discovery of statins revolutionised the treatment of high cholesterol, saving countless lives over the decades. His legacy in the field of medicine is profound and enduring. We would also like to highlight a significant contribution from our CEO, Prof. Asif Ahmed PhD FRSB. Prof. Ahmed was the first to conduct multicentre randomised controlled trials on the use of statins in pregnant women with preeclampsia. His groundbreaking study, published in BJOG: An International Journal of Obstetrics & Gynaecology, explores the potential of pravastatin for early-onset preeclampsia, offering hope for improved maternal and fetal outcomes. His research has helped us to develop targeted therapeutics like MZe786 that has been approved for fast track (ILAP) by the UK regulator, MHRA. Use of definitive digital diagnostic portal (M-PREG®️) and MZe786 would allow one test, one pill, save two lives to become a reality. Since HCA Healthcare's $1.5 billion acquisition of Mission Health in 2019, multiple urologists have departed the system, indicating broader physician discontent. An Asheville Watchdog report highlighted the exit of three urologists from Mission Urology between late 2022 and mid-2023. Additionally, urologists from Asheville Urological Associates began relinquishing their practice privileges at Mission in 2022. Former Mission urologist Brian Cohen, MD, mentioned he was terminated without cause and criticized the lack of support staff consistency. He expressed concerns about local patients needing to travel for specialized urological care due to staff shortages. A letter from Mission physicians previously addressed quality of care and corporate culture issues post-acquisition, noting the departure of over 200 physicians and numerous staff. HCA's spokesperson, Nancy Lindell, stated that job departures are due to various reasons and emphasized ongoing recruitment efforts. Asheville Urological Associates declined to comment further on the issue. Chief Medical Editor Dwight Akerman, OD, MBA shared a research review from Noel Brennan and Mark Bullimore that provided a comprehensive overview of which patients to treat for myopia and how to evaluate treatment outcomes. Dr. Akerman wrote: "The authors emphasize the importance of treating all myopic children, measuring refractive error and axial length accurately, considering the factors that influence myopia progression, and setting attainable treatment goals. "This research review provides valuable information for clinicians who manage juvenile-onset myopia and highlights the need for continued research in this field."
