"Ethiopia is undergoing rapid urbanization, but most of the focus is on buildings and businesses...what about the standard of living? Do they have access to public space? If the kids don't have a place to play, what's the point of the city?” —Aklilu Fikresilassie, Program Manager, UN-Habitat (United Nations Human Settlements Programme) #WorldUrbanismDay #urbanplanning #buildingequity #buildingresilientcities

🌍 How can National Urban Policies (NUPs) unlock the full potential of #cities? 📊 The latest edition of the Global Survey on National Urban Policy, in collaboration with UN-Habitat (United Nations Human Settlements Programme), is out now ➡ http://oe.cd/5M1 🎯 The report covers data from 78 countries and offers practical insights for policy makers at all levels of government striving to improve urban lives and achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (#SDGs). 🏙️ With the global population increasingly concentrating in urban areas, cities are driving national economic growth, but challenges such as inequalities, affordable housing shortages, extreme weather events, pollution, and loss of green space persist. 🔑 National Urban Policies (NUPs) can play a key role in managing these challenges and unlocking the full potential of cities.

Happy and proud to announce the launch of the Global State of National Urban Policy 2024 report, at the #WUF12 in Cairo, a joint effort between the OECD Centre for Entrepreneurship, SMEs, Regions & Cities and UN-Habitat (United Nations Human Settlements Programme)! Many thanks to the amazing people I had the privilege to work with: Alicja Mizeracka, Stefan Jankowski, Nina Pambi Pedersen, Tadashi Matsumoto Shipra Narang Suri, Aziza Akhmouch, Soo-Jin Kim, Remy Sietchiping, Kinyanjui Michael, Antonio Kipyegon, Alix Philouze, Jack Waters, Andrew Paterson, Laurence Todd and many others. Thank you for the great journey! A few key messages: 1. Mainstreaming of National Urban Policies (NUP)📈 Over 80% of surveyed countries have a NUP, with explicit policies jumping from 51% to 72% since 2018. Dedicated agencies or ministries now oversee NUPs in more than half of these countries. NUPs are now essential tools in national policy! 🌍 2. Major Priorities: Resilience, Climate, Housing. 90% of NUPs now prioritize building resilience to shocks and crises. 🌆Climate action is another key focus, with 50% of NUPs treating it as a priority - up from just 13% in 2018. Affordable, adequate housing has emerged as a core issue, with 80% of NUPs targeting adequate housing and 77% addressing housing affordability challenges. 🏘️ As housing prices outpace income in major cities, this focus is more important than ever. 3. Challenges and Future Directions for NUPs: Economic and social resilience is a growing area for NUPs, as policies must address not only climate but also economic shocks and social challenges, like migration and AI's impact on jobs. Leveraging NUP for unlocking the potential of urban-rural linkages and integrated regional development is another key area, when currently only 45% of NUPs is tackling it. And financing remains a critical challenge. While national funding still drives NUPs, only few countries use innovative financial solutions 💰 4. Importance of Monitoring to Document Impacts and Ensure Transparency. Monitoring and evaluation mechanisms now exist in 75% of NUPs, with 70% using clear targets and indicators—up from 38% in 2021. But there’s room for improvement: only 54% publish these reports. And many more to be discovered in the full report available here: https://lnkd.in/d8eX5azD
