1 MAY, MAY DAY: Happy May Day, my friends! Today marks the height of spring. The days are getting longer, fields greener, flowers bursting, bees buzzing. The fits of winter have hit their last snooze and WE'RE AWAKE ALREADY! Being the halfway point between the spring equinox and the summer solstice, celebration of this day has both deep roots in history and across cultures around the globe. Common to our Anglo-Saxon heritage in the US, this holiday has Celtic origin and is known for the pagan holiday Beltane, second most significant behind Samhain (Halloween). For obvious reasons, this holiday is a festival of rebirth. To celebrate all the traditions, get yourself some flowers, leave a basket of flowers on a neighbor's doorstep, braid a crown of flowers to wear or gift, have some flowers for your table. Dancing around a Maypole with colorful ribbons isn't as common anymore but do whatever makes ya happy. Today is all things spring so let's go get sprung! (I chose to get a bouquet of big-bulbed, orange flowers for my table where I've been drawing with oil pastels. Even with all the colors of the rainbow in as many shades as man can make, aren't those flowers the most beautifully saturated?)
