Around 50 percent of #women in the deaf community experience #domesticviolence. #Research suggests the deaf community report experiencing victimization at higher rates, but a lack of accessible resources and trauma-informed services for American Sign Language speakers make it difficult for deaf people to report crimes and access support. In this report, Urban provides recommendations for how New York City’s Barrier Free Living (BFL) and similar direct service programs can improve and adapt staffing, services, and outreach to strengthen their response to deaf survivors. See Urban’s additional recommendations and findings from our evaluation of BFL’s program. https://urbn.is/3zWYLwl

We’re thrilled to see that Episode One: Deaf Identity has reached such a large audience within and beyond our Deaf community! Our team originally created this series to generate more discussion about Deaf culture because as we say in the beginning – this docuseries does not reflect or represent the entire Deaf, DeafBlind, DeafDisabled, Hard of Hearing, and Late-Deafened community. We would love to know your perspective on the different topics discussed in Deaf Identity – use the hashtag #DeafAnd to join the conversation and share your thoughts! #DeafAnd #DeafIdentity #MorpheyesPresents #Morpheyes #Docuseries #Deaf #DeafCulture ID: This photo is taken from the end of Episode One: Deaf Identity, after the credits. It shows a theater stage, lit with bright stage lights hanging above, and a wooden floor with a pitch-black background. There are four brown chairs arranged in a semi-circle facing the camera, where the interviewees sat during filming. In white text in the center, over the black background of the stage, is a hashtag with the title of the series: #DeafAnd. Underneath it in all capital letters is the phrase: Join the Conversation. End of image description.

When I succinctly summarize Deaf issues by labelling discrimination for what it is, I am often told I am not doing a good enough job explaining it. When I try to explain the history behind the issue, people are mad I didn't explain it short enough. And when I break it down into 1 minute pieces, people say they don't get how it all connects. Really it just feels like people don't like acknowledging their discrimination against Deaf. This is an attempt at summarizing all of Deaf history as it relates to Deaf identity and discrimination from what I have processed so far. https://lnkd.in/gnkWpSY7

👍 It's Deaf Awareness Week! 👍 Around 11 million people in the UK are deaf or have hearing loss, so Deaf Awareness Week was created to highlight the challenges the deaf community face and share the ways we can help to communicate! Our friends at CNTW help to run a Mental Health and Deafness Service at Walkergate Park, specifically aimed at supporting deaf and deafblind adults who have mental health problems and/or learning disabilities. They have some recommendations for supporting and communicating with those with deafness: 📌 Speak to the deaf person, not the interpreter. 📌When sending appointment letters, provide the option to use text messaging and email to contact the team; please do not ask Deaf people to ring a number. 📌Make sure you have the person’s attention before you start speaking. 📌Places with good lighting and less background noise are best for conversations. 📌Use your normal volume, lip movements and facial expressions; you don’t need to exaggerate or raise your voice. 📌Check whether the person understands what you are saying, and if they don’t, try another way of communicating it – never say ‘don’t worry about it’ and move on. Learn more about Mental Health and Deafness Service and the great work they do on the CNTW website here: https://lnkd.in/ekg7WNwc
