Kicked off Slush Day 2 with Ilkka Paananen’s powerful words: "Get comfortable with uncomfortable." Here are some key insights from his session that I’m taking with me: ✅ Be systematic about team building. ✅ A good structure and process enable clarity. ✅ It’s one thing to achieve success—repeating it is the hard part. ✅ Focus on the organization and culture, not just the product. ✅ Celebrate failures for the lessons learned through them. ✅ Focus on the inputs you can control, like team building and culture—good outcomes follow naturally. ✅ Create an environment where your team can perform at their best. The day is just getting started, and I’m excited to soak up all the lessons and energy from the amazing lineup of speakers ahead! 😋

Kicking off 2025 🔥 We sometimes forget who we are, why we are here, and what we want to achieve. Moreover, we often forget how great our teammates are, what they seek or dream of, how ambitious they are, and how incredible the journey we are participating in is. A picture is worth a thousand words. Our team has created the shared vision board for Q1. We picked childish but intuitive images that directly represent one's own desires. Here were our common obsessions: - Fans over customers 💙 - Revenue growth 🤑 - Insanely great product ✨ - Ambitious team 🧑🤝🧑 We should clearly understand each other's honest and instinctive desires to get aligned with the same vision and goal. These fundamental motivations and sparks from our hearts build mutual trust as one team. Yess is aiming for 10x growth this year. If you want to add your desire and talent to the board, please DM me anytime. Let's build it together! 🚀

𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮 𝗕𝟮𝗖 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗺𝗲𝗿 𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵 𝗔𝗽𝗽: 𝗔 𝗥𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗼𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿 🎢 New year, same startup grind—but wow, what a journey it’s been! If you’ve ever tried building a B2C app, you know it’s like trying to solve a Rubik’s Cube while skydiving 🪂. Here are some chaotic (but real) thoughts from the trenches: 𝟭. 𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮 𝗕𝟮𝗖 𝗮𝗽𝗽 𝗶𝘀 𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗶𝗰𝘂𝗹𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗹𝘆 𝗛𝗔𝗥𝗗. You want a global product with a localized vibe? Sure, no problem. Scale it fast, but make it cheap, lean, and efficient? Why not. Oh, and can we get great retention? Stickiness? Engagement? An onboarding funnel that actually converts? And let’s toss in some revenue on top. No biggie, right? 😅 𝟮. 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻 𝗳𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝗼𝗿 𝗱𝗶𝗲 𝘀𝗹𝗼𝘄. The only thing we should do quickly is learn. But HOW? You’re not a B2B SaaS where you can call your customers and say, “Hey, Susan, how’s the tool working out for your team?” No, we’re talking millions of users, not 100 accounts. A/B tests? Sure, but they take weeks or months. What do we even test first? And managing all those app versions—on mobile—is a whole other nightmare. (Web apps, we envy your refresh-button simplicity 🤦♂️). 𝟯. 𝗠𝗲𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰𝘀 = 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗼𝘀. Retention—what’s good, what’s bad? Push notifications? Are we spamming people? Which tool even works best? Oh, and convincing users to give permissions? You might as well ask them to hand over their passwords. Emails? Sure, but then they open it on a laptop, and your mobile app metrics just cry in the corner. 😭 𝟰. 𝗟𝗲𝘁’𝘀 𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗸 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘄𝘁𝗵. What even is growth? More users? Okay, but is a “user” someone who downloads the app? Registers? Visits once? Uses it four times a month? And if we want users, do we go organic? Performance marketing? TikTok ads? Insta? But attribution is a pain—how do you even know which ad brought them in?! 🤷♂️ And here’s the kicker: do we buy users? Cheap users sound tempting until you realize they bounce faster than a rubber ball. Or do we go for high-quality ones—expensive, but sticky? Or better yet, no marketing at all and rely on network effects? (But hey, we’re not a social app, so…how?) 𝟱. 𝗢𝗵, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗸𝗲𝗲𝗽 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗺 𝘁𝗼𝗴𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿. Fast growth, constant pivots (we’ve done three this year alone), and a mix of excitement and uncertainty—it’s like running a marathon on a treadmill that randomly speeds up and slows down. But somehow…we’ve pulled off some magic, we launched a product and 𝗶𝗻 𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝗮 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿: 🚀 𝟮𝟬𝟬𝗞+ 𝗿𝗲𝗴𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗱 users, 𝟰𝟬𝗞 𝗠𝗔𝗨, 𝟰𝟱% organic. 🌍 Expanded to 𝟯 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀. 📈 Flat monthly retention curves (20% overall, 50% for users who hit the “aha” moment). 💰 Even started making revenue while staying scrappy. 🥵 Less than 30K monthly burn with 15 people. Building a B2C app is chaos, but it’s our chaos. And honestly, I wouldn’t trade it for anything. 🙌 Wanna learn what is mood by the way? Let's connect 🙃.

August recap - what is typically a slow month for most proved to be a pretty hectic month at Riley, in the best way possible! When all is quiet on the media / events / client meetings front - all is busy behind the scenes at Riley HQ 💡 We spent the month re-figuring out better ways of working together as we grow out our team. Our Q3 team day last week, which always starts with a strategy session, was arguably the most productive one yet. Here are some questions we asked ourselves: - What are your values and goals, and how do I fit into them? - How can we communicate better? - How can we work more efficiently? - Is that process we use still working? The most common word of the day turned out to be *CONTEXT*. A great learning for us all and its re-framing how we work together. Thanks to our whole team for their valuable input as always Aine Kilkenny Meaghan Droney Jennifer Murray Sinéad Mulcahy, Jacqueline O' Carroll McCarthy missing the wonderful Rachel Gardner and Jessica Mullins!
