For the first time in 22 years, new trains have been introduced to the Lisbon Metro, and they carry a significant distinction. According to Miguel Pinto Luz, the design of these new trains reflects decades of accumulated knowledge within the Lisbon Metro. Metro drivers played a key role in shaping the design of the cabins, while the entire Metro team contributed to improving the triple-unit trains. This collaborative effort stands as a point of pride for all involved. Its time for trams. Most of Europe build cheaper, better tram networks than the UK, but this can change. We can learn from other countries on the power of trams to drive clean and green growth. But we must make it easier and cheaper for cities to get get building them. In this blog by the brilliant Robert Kwolek he highlights how a city the size of Lincoln built a tram network fast and cheap and what we might learn from it. Create Streets' are embarking on a new mission alongside the Campaign for Better Transport to get more tram lines under construction in the next 5 years. https://lnkd.in/eA-knFTW

Jonathan, a transport consultant advising the North East, considers the Metro to be an exemplar of innovation. Those of us who live in the NE would probably disagree! He writes that the “two key elements to a successful urban rail network [are] best use of emerging technology and local decision makers who embody the spirit of civic entrepreneurialism”. Both good points, but I’d add a third … reliability. The metro has unfortunately failed on this point. Just 61% of trains on time last month. An this new fleet? Two years late and we just have one in service.
With new trains coming into service on the Tyne and Wear Metro here’s a reminder of all the reasons why the Metro continues to be the UK’s most progressive urban railway - and what lessons can be learnt from it. https://lnkd.in/ez35zzfA #Tyneandwearmetro

Video From Barcelona.Spain **Improving Railway Safety with Pedestrian Crossings** Railway travel is a vital mode of transportation, but it also carries inherent safety risks. One innovative solution to improve railway safety is the pedestrian crossing in railway concept. The pedestrian crossing in railway design involves constructing dedicated walkways or bridges that allow pedestrians to safely cross railway tracks without interfering with oncoming trains. This serves several key advantages: **Increased Safety**: By physically separating pedestrians from active railway lines, the risk of fatal collisions and accidents is drastically reduced. This protects both rail passengers and nearby community members. **Enhanced Efficiency**: Pedestrian crossings minimize disruptions to railway schedules, as trains no longer need to slow down or stop for people crossing the tracks. This improves overall transportation efficiency. **Community Integration**: Well-designed pedestrian crossings can seamlessly integrate railways into local neighborhoods, improving access and connectivity for residents. **Environmental Benefits**: Fewer train slowdowns and stops means reduced fuel consumption and emissions, providing environmental advantages. Implementing pedestrian crossings is an important step railways can take to boost safety, efficiency, and community relations. As rail travel continues to grow, this innovative approach deserves serious consideration by transportation planners and railway operators worldwide. #RailwaySafety #PedestrianCrossing #TransportationInfrastructure #RailwaySignaling #TrackCircuits #RailwaySafety #RailwayIndustry #Innovation #signalling #transportation #trains #mobility #design #engineering #railways #railway #urban #metro #signal #signalling #maintenance #controlsystems #monitoringsystem #operation #safety #cbtc #construction #monorail #atc #subway #facilities #simulation #simulationsoftware #England #london #british #engineer #research #development #technology #spain #England #uk #latinoamérica #egypt #India #Japan #china #italy #asia #urban #signaling #australia

One for the infrastructure nerds. This video was taken in the summer of 2022 in Amsterdam centraal station from the shopping centre area looking over at Noord. What you can see in this video is: * Pedestrians walking on the path * Major cycle route through the city * Free ferry to Noord * Construction of bike park not underground but underwater for 4000 bikes * New developments on former industrial lands bringing higher density to the city Oh and a cruise ship casually passing through… (Though the least environmentally friendly transport option here) What you can’t see in the video but it’s either above, behind or below where it was taken is: * The metro lines to other parts of the city * Bus Station * Train station which gets you to the Airport in 15 minutes * A hub for all tram routes in the city It’s a great example of doing public infrastructure at scale with multiple options to make it easier to get around the city!!! #infrastructure #publictransport #Amsterdam #15minutecity

Tramways have long been a staple of urban transportation, usually drawing power from overhead lines. However, there is another innovative approach, the Ground-Level Power Supply (GLPS). This system allows trams to collect electric power at ground level from individually-powered segments, offering several advantages over the conventional overhead lines. Unlike the third rail systems used in some railways, which are continually powered and pose a risk to pedestrians and vehicles, GLPS segments can be controlled by radio. These segments automatically switch on or off depending on whether a tram is passing over them. This radio-controlled activation ensures there is no risk to other road users, as the segments are only electrified when necessary. As cities continue to evolve and prioritize sustainability and safety, ground-level power supply represents a significant advancement in tramway technology, offering a cleaner, safer, and more efficient means of urban transportation.
