The greenest building is the one that already exists, so why are we demolishing so many? On #Thursday, we dig deep into the world of retrofit at this Place North West event and ask if we are any closer to overcoming the colossal challenge of repurposing and reusing our existing buildings. Book your ticket and be part of the solution. At Sustainability in Practice: Retrofit, we are bringing together developers, architects, contractors, local authorities, and more to share best practices, lessons learned, and case studies that show the practical ways we can actually deliver retrofit initiatives at scale.

Remembering John Prescott: ‘His ideas always packed a punch’ John McElgunn #OpinionPiece | Architects’ Journal Championing Modern Methods of Construction Prescott’s advocacy for MMC reflected his forward-thinking approach to construction. He recognised that prefabrication and modular techniques could deliver high-quality, energy-efficient housing at scale, addressing both housing shortages and carbon emissions. RSHP’s YMCA project highlighted these principles, offering a model for sustainable and affordable housing. These efforts were part of Prescott’s broader push for innovation in urban planning. By emphasising collaboration between policymakers, architects, developers and charities, he sought to embed sustainability into the fabric of urban regeneration. His work encouraged architects to explore cutting-edge solutions that addressed both the social and environmental dimensions of urban living. A global perspective: The Kyoto Protocol On the international stage, Prescott was a key figure in the negotiations for the Kyoto Protocol. As the UK’s lead negotiator, he skilfully aligned European Union priorities with global targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The 1997 treaty, which set legally binding emissions reduction targets, marked a milestone in international climate governance. Having watched Grand Design regarding modular housing approaches in Europe. With its speed, efficiency and minimisation of waste and green house gas reduction, isn’t it about time that we considered alternative building methods rather than relying on the current outdated construction approaches? Wouldn’t this be one way of addressing housing affordability and availability?
