Your unwanted clothes are treasure! Here's a workshop we did with Alexandra Hospital from last December where a group of participants got to try turning old t-shirts into tote bags - a fun exercise which also imparts basic crafting skills. Besides, there are many more possibilities such as having a fashion swap, turning old clothes into other usable objects and organising a donation drive to repurpose unwanted fashion pieces. With Earth Day coming up (and Earth Month this April 🌏 ), let's upcycle funk-it-up with a sustainability activity at your workplace. Whichever activity you choose, it'll probably be amazing, just the way you are hoping it'll be! #workplaceactivity #workplaceexperience #employeeengagement #corporateworkshops #teambuilding

Degrowth is always on our minds. Why? 100 billion garments are produced every year, and the fashion industry continues to grow year after year, disregarding planetary boundaries. Although there have been recent industry pushes towards expanded sustainability models, retroactive efforts of donating to environmental charities are not enough if fashion brands do not address the fundamental issues within their production process. Simply put: brands are producing too much product. Remake is committed to holding the fashion industry accountable by advocating for transparency, policy reform, and empowering the next generation of activists with the resources they need to grow into their change-making power. For our second 🧠 WISDOM WEDNESDAY 🧩 we want to shine the light on #MendItMay. Run by The Sustainable Fashion Week team, #MendItMay invites everyone to mend clothing to keep it alive, celebrating repair as an act of empowerment. From 1st May they run an annual digital campaign on Instagram for people to get mending and share their achievements, big or small with the hashtag. WHY MEND? - Extending the life of a garment by an extra 9 months reduces its environmental impact by 20-30% (Traid) - Extending the average life of clothes by a third while reducing the need for new clothing would reduce the carbon, waste, and water footprints from the production stage by more than 20% (Nottingham Trent University) - 77% of those asked at our clothes repair workshop said that they would keep the item that they had mended for at least another 3 years with a third of people stating that they would keep the item for more than 10 years. (Triad) - An estimated £140m worth of clothing is sent to landfill every year. (WRAP) Additionally, even if you plan to donate items to charities or take them to a swap, they require that items are in wearable condition sans holes and missing trims. So, as we change out our winter wardrobe for summer essentials, let’s make time to mend them too. 🪡 https://lnkd.in/dfP5TMg #sustainablefashion #repair #regenrate #rewear #repurpose #reconnect #wisdomwednesday #stayintheloop

As we approach Giving Tuesday, the No Kill Magazine team and I decided to spotlight five remarkable organizations that are 1. NYC based 2. Fashion related 3. Also have volunteer opportunities –because many of our readers may not be able to donate but have the energy to volunteer. They are: FABSCRAP – This innovative nonprofit tackles textile waste by recycling discarded fabric from the fashion industry, diverting over 1 million pounds of fabric from landfills. Custom Collaborative – Empowering low-income and immigrant women through training in sustainable fashion design, Custom Collaborative not only fosters career development but also promotes environmental consciousness. remake.world – A fierce advocate for garment workers' rights and environmental justice, Remake is committed to ending exploitative industry practices. Extinction Rebellion / Extinction Rebellion NYC – While not solely focused on fashion, XRNYC’s activism powerfully intersects with sustainable industry practices by challenging systemic issues and promoting radical change in environmental policies. New Standard Institute – Maxine Bédat et al. are at the forefront of legislative change, working tirelessly to pass the Fashion Act, which aims to hold fashion brands accountable for their environmental and social impacts. Donating or volunteering can greatly assist their efforts. If any of these pique your interest click on their names to learn more. I wanted to share this before the holiday weekend and hope everyone has a great weekend. #thefashionact #GivingTuesday #SustainableFashion #SocialImpact #EnvironmentalSustainability

In an era of "underconsumption core" and "upcycling," a Latina-run nonprofit in Los Angeles is making waves in sustainable fashion. Radical Clothes Swap, founded by Nicole Macias and Jannine Mancilla, is revolutionizing how we think about our wardrobes and consumption habits. How it works: • Free clothing swaps throughout LA • Bring 5-10 items, take home 5-10 items • Monthly event at Angel City Brewery • Founded in 2021 by first-gen children of immigrants • Recognized by the City of Los Angeles for their impact. Their mission? To provide free resources, normalize radical sustainability, and transform our relationship with consumption and capitalism. As Macias puts it, "In a capitalist-run world, what's one of the most radical things we can do? To us, that's giving away free resources." This initiative not only reduces textile waste but also creates an inclusive space for all, embodying the founders' immigrant roots and sustainable upbringing. Have you participated in clothing swaps? How do you practice sustainable fashion? #SustainableFashion #CircularEconomy #LatinasInBusiness #NonProfit

How Do We Redefine “Enough” in Fashion? The fashion industry produces over 100 billion garments each year, yet millions go unworn or discarded. As consumers and industry leaders, it’s time to ask: • How can we move from over-manufacturing to more mindful production? • What role do consumers and brands play in reshaping this cycle? • Could upcycling initiatives, like our Denim Drive, be a helpful in reducing waste? At Thread Haus, we believe the solutions start with conversations like these. Let’s rethink what we really need and how we can drive meaningful change together. What’s your take? Share your thoughts or ideas in the comments, and let’s collaborate on a more sustainable future. Lets us know if you are interested in donating or contributing to our end of the year denim drive #Sustainability #RethinkFashion #CircularEconomy #MindfulConsumption
