SIX STAND OUT EXAMPLES OF URBAN SUSTAINABIITY - from around the 🌎 The impact of cities on climate change is undeniable. 🌇While they occupy only 3% of the Earth’s surface, cities house over 50% of the world’s population 🪫Cities consume between 60% and 80% of global energy 🚙Cities are responsible for 75% of carbon emissions. It is evident that any sustainability plan must start with our cities. Cities tailor their strategies based on local needs, resources, and existing policies. However, many are increasingly recognizing the importance of greening as part of their climate adaptation and mitigation efforts. It's time for our Cities to think beyond traditional planning methods and adopt innovative strategies that integrate urban greening and nature-based solutions. Looking for some inspiration and leadership in this space? Check out these six standout examples of urban sustainability, leading the way towards a greener and more resilient future. Model projections show that over 2.5 billion people are expected to live in urban areas by 2050. Concerns over space scarcity, resource allocation, and climate resiliency push cities, architects, and urban planners to search for answers within an existing infrastructure. Adaptive reuse, put simply, is the repurposing of old, outdated, and abandoned structures and spaces for new use. Today, it is considered one of the best architectural strategies to promote social justice and address the climate crisis. It functions as a tool to realize urban regeneration, preserve cultural heritage, and reduce costs and environmental impacts from construction and new materials, all while creating prosperity and redistributing opportunity in condensed urban centers. Research shows that in most circumstances, adaptive reuse "better establishes or retains community identity and does more to foster local pride than new construction." 👇 Read more about how MKThink demonstrates the benefits of adaptive reuse across their projects.
