If undergraduates start participating in research by 2nd year, will they find it less tedious? ☹️In many parts of Africa, undergraduates learn research methods by 2nd year, but they only put this knowledge into practice during their final year thesis. By final year, this student would have forgotten what they learnt and needs to relearn.😓 Combining thesis, vocational training, intra-semester training, and other course work overwhelms the students making them abhor research altogether.😤 How can we nurture the love for research in undergraduates?

There is a significant underestimation of postdocs' capabilities when transitioning into professional careers. A persistent misconception holds that the postdoc phase is merely an extension of training, to be constantly replaced by new recruits. Coupled with the looming retirement of baby boomers in Germany , this view fails to recognize that highly skilled professionals, particularly those operating or utilizing large research facilities, are not easily replaced. This talent drain has become a key factor in limiting the EU's economic growth to just 8% over the past 15 years, while the US has grown by 85%, according to IMF data. A guiding example is X-ray based operando study domain that has failed to excite industry so far and is not achieving its potential even after two decades of pioneering development. To address this, research leadership must rethink the role of postdocs by integrating them more fully into decision-making and opening leadership pipelines for them. Organizations should focus on retaining and empowering these skilled professionals through clear, well-defined career development pathways, rather than fostering illusions of advancement with no tangible endpoint. Recognizing and addressing this reality is not only urgent but essential for maintaining competitiveness and preventing a deeper talent crisis in this research-driven economy. #TalentCrisis #ineffectivestrategies #PursuingThistles

On November 4th, Instituto Superior Técnico marked a new chapter in doctoral education with the launch of the Técnico Doctoral School at the 10th edition of their PhD Open Days. This school is reshaping the training of PhD students in Engineering, Science, and Architecture, increasing internships in companies and training in transversal skills on topics such as artificial intelligence, entrepreneurship, and science communication. During the launch, the Técnico Innovation Summit brought students closer to real-world opportunities, with speed-dating interviews connecting them to potential employers and offering valuable career insights. 🌟 𝗨𝗻𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗸 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵! 🌟 During this year’s 𝗣𝗼𝘀𝘁𝗱𝗼𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗔𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗪𝗲𝗲𝗸 as part of 𝗞𝗛𝗬𝗦 Postdoc Days 2024, the maKeIT team led an inspiring workshop, "𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁'𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗶𝘁? - 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗹𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵". In this engaging session, participants dove deep into the 𝗚𝗼𝗹𝗱𝗲𝗻 𝗖𝗶𝗿𝗰𝗹𝗲 𝗳𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗲𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸, exploring the core motivations (the "WHY") behind their research. They then aligned their work with the 𝗦𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗗𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗚𝗼𝗮𝗹𝘀 (𝗦𝗗𝗚𝘀), creating an action plan to maximize the real-world impact of their research across various fields. The atmosphere at 𝗧𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗹 𝗦𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗶𝗼 was filled with energy as researchers reflected on how their work can contribute to a better future, gained new perspectives, and connected with like-minded peers. In June, OMNI’s first cohort of Research Fellows graduated from the program! OMNI’s Research Fellowship program provides an environment for early-career professional development, offering a supportive community for Research Fellows to get direct experience of applied research in a consultancy context. As Research Fellow Christina Chavez shared, "It feels like such a safe community where I can really express myself and keep climbing up that ladder to learn more and grow." Learn more about Christina’s experiences as a first-cohort Research Fellow in the attached video. Christina appreciates the opportunity to build meaningful relationships and learn from one another. "I love the relationships that I’ve built here and how much I’ve learned from others," she added. In addition to the sense of community, the Research Fellowship equips participants with exposure to a broad range of skills—from quantitative and qualitative analysis to project management and technical assistance.
