We want to thank all our attendees who joined us for the 2024 ULI Netherlands Annual Conference - we were thrilled to facilitate thoughtful discussions and innovative explorations of the resilient future of the European and Global built environment. Our personal key takeaways from the theme of 'Future Proof Cities' include: 🔵 It is impossible to shape cities by merely investing in tangible assets (‘stones’) without improving the position of human beings. Investing in people, particularly in education, is essential — from the speech of Ahmed Aboutaleb, Mayor of #Rotterdam. 🔵 Understanding who we are building for is essential – 'While context, culture, and climate may vary, human behaviour is universal' - from the presentation by Morten Kjer Jeppesen 🔵 Enhancing existing spaces should be a focus of already dense European cities such as #Paris – presented by Marion Waller. 🔵 Disruptive technologies, diverse energy sources, and a sustainable ecosystem in our urban areas can be part of a collective international approach to changing the economic function of our cities. – from the presentation by Brigit van Dijk - van de Reijt Speakers Marion Waller, Jeroen Lokerse, Morten Kjer Jeppesen, Ahmed Aboutaleb, Brigit van Dijk - van de Reijt, and moderator Susanne Heering brought their insight into regional and pan-European trends, from investment, finance and sustainable construction to anticipating change and moving with the times. Thank you to CBRE for hosting this event, and to our Executive Director Inger Kammeraat. Find all photos of the event here: https://lnkd.in/eW3hiQxu

🎤 What you missed at the #RethinkCitiesInnovationAwards 💫 Last Monday, the stage at Sønderborg came alive with powerful ideas and transformative visions, thanks to our incredible keynote speakers. Each brought their unique expertise, leaving us with invaluable perspectives on how we can rethink and reshape our cities for a sustainable future: 💡Sissel Hansen, Co-founder of Impact the Future masterfully guided us through the day as our moderator, ensuring every moment of the event flowed seamlessly. Her energy, insight, and ability to connect with both speakers and audience members truly made the event unforgettable. 💡Kjeld Stærk, Chairman of the Committee for Business and Green Growth, Sønderborg Municipality (Sønderborg Kommune); former Senior Vice President, Chairman, Danfoss set the stage with an inspiring opening speech, highlighting the importance of collaboration, innovation, and leadership in driving sustainable urban transformation. 💡Prof. Dr. Gesa Ziemer, Academic Lead UNITAC Hamburg (with UN Habitat, OICT); Director City Science Lab (with MIT Media Lab) posed a critical question: “How can we implement urban technologies in cities and scale them up?” offering a forward-thinking roadmap for integrating technology into urban landscapes. 💡Navid Samandari, Head of Ventures at The Footprint Firm, asked us to consider: “Do we need more innovation to feed our net-zero ambitions?” pushing us to reimagine the role of innovation in achieving a sustainable future. 💡Daria (Dasha) Krivonos, CEO of the Copenhagen Institute for Futures Studies reframed uncertainty as a tool, not an obstacle, with her keynote: “Uncertainty as a feature, not a bug.” Her words encouraged us to embrace unpredictability as a catalyst for creativity and resilience. Their words left a lasting impact, inspiring us all to rethink and rebuild cities for a sustainable future. 🌍✨ What was your favourite moment from the event? I'm at the Connected Places Summit for the next two days. The Connected Places Catapult is the UK's innovation accelerator for cities, transport and place leadership. Cities are responsible for more than 80% of global GDP and 70% of global energy-related carbon emissions. Today over 50% of the global population lives in urban areas. By 2045, the world's urban population will increase by 1.5 times to 6 billion. Some of the themes for the Summit are urban renewal, responsible growth, social inclusion and overcoming regional disparity. Central to Connected Places is the role of the built environment; infrastructure, transport and the need for digital and physical connectivity in these places. Thanks to the CPC and their strategic partners Department for Transport (DfT), United Kingdom , DNV and Innovate UK.

- The future is always important, but never urgent! Daria (Dasha) Krivonos of the Copenhagen Institute for Futures Studies pinpointed our human bias towards today. But by asking us to imagine a day in the life of a child we know, when they are our age, she also showed us a way to give more weight to the problems of tomorrow. This stands out as the central message of the Nordic Edge Expo for me. After all It's tomorrow, and we can’t afford to wait to solve the challenges of the future. How do we #BeTheChange? Johan Galster of We Do Democracy brought in the importance of acceptance from inhabitants, with useful tips of how involvement processes creates better solutions and happier public. Sveinung Jørgensen and Lars Jacob Tynes Pedersen of the Centre for Sustainable Business // CSB NHH underlined the need for testing solutions in real world situations, with quick evaluation to make sustainable processes move faster towards impact. (Check out their podcast - Bærekraftseventyr med Jørgensen og Pedersen - in Norwegian.) After this and more, we were ready for the workshop on how to decarbonize urban mobility. A truly exiting day where Ellen Figved Thoresen (Stavanger) and Øvind S. Tanum (Trondheim) challenged us to find solutions on how to reach the Net Zero target within 2030 under the supervision of EIT Urban Mobility, Climate-KIC and Nordic Edge. Through intense group sessions with engaged and competent participants from all over Europe, process and solutions to move cities in a direction of reduced climate emissions and better cities were discussed. Hopefully valuable to the cities. Which brings us back to the starting point of the Expo – AppliedAutonomy’s interesting seminar on increased potential in public transport by replacing the bus driver with autonomous busses. Liisa Andersson of Ruter As took us for a ride into a future where shared robotaxis in cooperation with high capacity public transport has replaced the private car. As this is happening now, Ronny Fiuren of Forus industrial park, put it clearly: - It’s time to move from pilots to operations. Together with Mads Simonsen Thuv - Ducky, Espen Jørgensen - Kogenta, Tom Henriksen - Telia and more we have got the snowball rolling. We for sure aim to beat yesterday!
