🛴 A nice study by my Deloitte colleagues for Bolt on the regulation of micromobility… Unsurprisingly, more often than not, more regulation does not lead to better outcomes. 🔎 Key findings: lighter and more flexible regulations lead to more affordable pricing for customers, increased utilisation of e-scooter services as a sustainable form of transport, and less financial burden on the cities that regulate them. Cities are often the silent architects of micromobility failure 🚳👀 A bold statement… But all too often this is the reality. Operators of both public and private systems, advocacy & expert groups and even cities themselves will admit it behind closed doors but in public the finger pointing continues 👉🏻👈🏻 Now this isn’t to say that there aren’t some fantastic examples of innovation in regulation, governance and business models. Great article by Dr. Regina Lee Clewlow for Forbes Highlighting the origins of micromobility as well as the need for incentivization within the current day. It will be crucial in the upcoming years to incorporate micromobility as an option via public transit systems & for partnerships to exist between the two industries. This will further incentivize subscription-based models and work to resolve the divide in transportation. Nowadays, many companies claim to be tech companies, but are they truly, or are they simply using new technologies within their traditional business models? The distinction seems subtle, it's actually a difference between two entirely different worlds. Many people are surprised to learn that Flix is a tech company, not just a typical bus company. In fact, our entire business is built on technology developed in-house by our teams. By prioritizing technology from the start, before buses and trains, we’ve been able to structure our entire organization and business model in a much leaner and more flexible way. This "internal kitchen" has a significant impact on the quality of the product we offer our customers in many areas, including: ✅ Network and schedule optimization ✅ More affordable prices ✅ A user-friendly booking system ✅ A bus-tracking feature ("Find My Bus") ✅ Advanced safety systems And many more innovations working in the background. When speaking with bus operators and industry players, it’s clear that adding these systems on top of a traditional, old-school business model would not only be costly and time-consuming but, in many cases, nearly impossible. The entire process would need to be reimagined. During our startup phase, we made the leap to this new tech-driven dimension early on. This work is far from over. It will continue alongside our business development. We have new tools, especially AI-based, to integrate into our processes. We teamed up with the Transportation Research and Education Center (TREC) at Portland State University to explore the taxes and fee structures paid by shared micromobility riders and companies across 120 cities in 16 different countries. ⬇️ Here what they found out: 📊 Fees vary dramatically between cities: Some cities charge no fees, while others impose high per-vehicle or per-trip fees. 💰 Shared micromobility is taxed twice, via sales tax/VAT and program fees: Globally, fees and taxes average 16.4% of fare revenues and make up $0.70 per mile traveled. 🚗 Shared micromobility taxes and fees are higher than most other modes of transportation, especially driving and ride hail: Shared micromobility trips pay fees and taxes that are 23 times higher than what drivers pay in the gas tax and 5 times higher than ride hail trips. 🏢 When deciding on fees, cities are especially concerned with covering administrative costs, as well as influencing operator behaviors: Less consideration was given to ensuring financial feasibility for scooter companies or lower costs for riders, despite the fact that both of these outcomes would positively contribute to the overall success of the shared micromobility system.   When cities align micromobility fee structures with their own goals, better programs can be built to ensure a greener future for all. 💚🌎 ➡ Check out the full research here: https://lnkd.in/g3B2Qvth
