RD24 ends, countdown to RD26 begins … The bi-annual research and development workshop hosted by the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development (ERDC) – RD24 – ended Thursday with several keynote presentations, including the Honorable Michael Connor, Assistant Secretary of the Army for Civil Works, and Edward E. Belk, Jr PE, director of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Civil Works Program. During three-day event, more than 1,000 people across the USACE enterprise either participated in-person or connected virtually to view some of the more than 400 presentations. This RD event – the fourth such event to be hosted by ERDC – seeks to foster research collaboration across ERDC’s seven research laboratories, with the focus on developing and then delivering engineering solutions that address many of the issues facing the Army and our nation. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Savannah and Mobile Districts, have awarded an architectural engineering service contract Dec. 30, 2024, for approximately $800k to support the ongoing Risk, Resiliency, and Water Line Condition Assessment Study for the City of Atlanta. The selected architectural engineering service, HDR Engineering, Inc., will partner with the Army Corps of Engineers and the City of Atlanta to evaluate risks and enhance the resiliency of the Atlanta Department of Watershed Management's drinking water system. The bi-annual research and development workshop hosted by the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development (ERDC) – RD24 – began Tuesday with several keynote presentations, headlined by LTG Scott Spellmon, PMP, 55th Chief of Engineers and Commanding General of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Chris Manning, Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Army for Research and Technology, and ERDC Director Dr. David Pittman. This marks the fourth RD event, and the first one to be primarily in-person since the COVID-19 pandemic. More than 1,000 people – combined in-person and virtual – registered for the 3-day event that seeks to foster research collaboration across ERDC’s seven research laboratories, with the focus on developing and then delivering engineering solutions that address many of the issues facing the Army and our nation. #MERCMonday | Fort Carson installed a 1MW "GridStar Flow" energy storage system to strengthen their #energyresilience, thanks to collaboration between their Directorate of Public Works, US Army Corps of Engineers Omaha District and Huntsville Center, Colorado Springs Utilities, and Lockheed Martin. What It Does. The pilot battery system can discharge energy for 10 hours, and it is estimated to deliver uninterruptable power to about 400 homes. Why It Matters. “At Fort Carson, this project will save us money, increase our installation’s energy and natural disaster resilience, and enhance our ability to fight on any battlefield as a power projection platform,” said Maj. Using the wrong coatings on an infrastructure project can lead to millions of dollars in remediation costs later in a project. A team of experts with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) and the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center, wants to prevent these potentially costly issues by providing input earlier in the process. The USACE Paint Technology Center, Technical Center of Expertise (PTCx) is at the forefront of cutting-edge research and development on coatings, while also supporting project managers across the Department of Defense in making sure they use the correct coatings, methods and personnel to protect infrastructure and buildings, reduce downtime and extent the service life. From offering timely reviews of project specifications and scrutiny of coatings planned for construction, to establishing the criteria by which our military uses these coatings, the PTCx’s Field Support Team has become a key resource.
