A few weeks old, but definitely a project worth talking about. Three lessons I’ve mulled over that might be helpful for others. 1. Planning is everything. This 3 minute clip took over six months of work. Details like flight times and mission profile were late in the game, as is expected. However, knowing the missions were on the books, getting a sense for what the scope of training was, that didn’t sneak up on us. For anyone in the #publicaffairs organization #publicrelations world, get into you operational planning early. 2. How you portray the story matters. This could have been a very sensational, politically charged story. But, that wouldn’t have matched with reality. We took the time to deliberately draw out what the story was and make sure we didn’t get drawn into the lore alluring side of sensational storytelling. In the end, our ability to maintain a moderate disposition allowed the newscrew to do their job and creatively tell the story in a way that fit how we saw the situation. 3. Don’t stop at the first “no.” There were many versions of “no” along the path to telling this story. No, you can’t fly a reporter on an AC-130J. No, you can’t use a military videographer for civilian media. No, you can’t have people on the live fire range. No, we can’t get you in-flight video footage. All of those ended up being, “yes, but here’s what you need to do” situations. No is often used as a catch all for, that’s more work or an individual’s experience and knowledge has been exceeded. Push past the no and find a solution. There are many more lessons out of this first international media flight on an AC-130J, but those are my top 3. If you have questions, shoot me a message. Always happy to talk. A big thanks to Rebecca Heyse and her team for making this happen, as well as the CNN International Commercial crew. Without them, none of this would have happened!
Recently we had the opportunity to host @CNN for an in-depth look at the AC-130J and how realistic SOF training equates to a credible integrated deterrent force. Check out the full broadcast and article here: https://lnkd.in/gD6EdGNc USSOCOM USFK

Honored to have had the chance to work with a 10G network and harvest, reduce, and analyze Synthetic Training Environment Data to assess network effectiveness. Through STE, our soldiers can enhance their training capabilities without ever having to leave home station. Truth in Testing! How does one estimate military power? Of course, i care more about a related question "how does one estimate the power of an #IP #portfolio". There are several lessons to be learned from this old RAND report, starting with the method described on page 4, of analyzing the outcome of conflicts in a range of specific contingencies, using some type of weighting. Also noted is that comparing numbers leads one to expect that equal forces lead top equal power, but history shows this is often far from the case. #Patenting by numbers anybody? The report ends on page 21 noting various problems in decision making when showing estimates to higher-ups: (a) Deficiencies in the generation of alternatives submitted to the top levels for decisions (b) Uncertainty avoidance procedures (c) Organization learning by generalization of particular episodes IP people, as a support function, are always presenting estimates, data and suggested actions to decision makers & clients. It is not easy to do a satisfactory job or be heard. Join us at #HotIPPitch for a hands on full day (November 28) to practice preparing IP and communicating it to decision makers. Register now! With the conflict in Ukraine, it exposed issues and concerns with the production of 155MM Artillery Shells and the United States Department of Defense (DoD) production compacity. As DoD modernize, integrate enabling #technology, or refurbish it's current fleet, it relies on the U.S. defense industrial base (DIB) which is a "network of people, organizations, facilities, and resources that provides the U.S. government—particularly the Department of Defense (DOD)— with defense-related materials, products, and service." 🤔 What individuals don't know it is not just commercial factories but an ecosystem of Government, Industry, Academic assets like Small Businesses, Federally Funded Research and Development Centers (FFRDCs), University Affiliated Research Centers (UARCs), Test Ranges, and Depots to name a few. Recently, Congressional Research Service published a very detailed report on the DIB titled "The U.S. Defense Industrial Base: Background and Issues for Congress." Additional, the report lays out the issues and concerns related to #supplychain and it's importance to the DIB. A great reference for anyone supporting DoD.
