As more coal plants across the country are scheduled to retire, converting #CoaltoNuclear provides an opportunity to bring new life to existing inftrastructure. The Natrium™ project is one such example, with the potential to deliver carbon-free energy at a competitive cost and is ready to integrate seamlessly into electric grids with high levels of renewables. This is an interesting story, the Palisades nuclear power plant in MI was shuttered in 2022 and is now being considered to come out of retirement if necessary licenses are approved. This would be the first successful restart of a nuclear power plant in American history! Why is this intriguing you ask? With the transition to a more renewable grid there seems to be a deviation between expected carbon neutral generation by a certain date and realized generation at that same date. PJM, the regional grid operator, isn't the only independent system operator (ISO) that is looking down the barrel at demand outpacing generation capabilities. Texas for example has seen a major influx of people and businesses over the past few years and is in a similar predicament of demand outpacing supply. The expansion of subsidized renewable energy has had a significant impact on the nuclear power industry in the United States. The nuclear industry in the U.S. has faced pressure from the expansion of subsidized renewable energy in recent years. This, coupled with relatively low-cost natural gas resources, has led to challenges for the nuclear power industry in maintaining competitiveness in the electricity market.
