This Pride Month, we celebrate the progress made thus far and continue to advocate for greater equality and inclusion everywhere.
Globally, 100+ countries now safeguard LGBTIQ+ rights, and social acceptance is growing. At the same time, polarization is increasing. In countries with the lowest tolerance levels, acceptance remains stagnant or declining. Despite greater acceptance and legal reform in many places, discriminatory laws remain in 64 countries, with 9 imposing the death penalty.
Strengthening human rights protections for LGBTIQ+ people is essential to achieve Goal 10. Key actions needed include decriminalizing same-sex relations, penalizing hate crimes, adopting laws banning discrimination, guaranteeing transgender rights, and training service providers to better serve LGBTIQ+ communities. Expanding the number of countries that provide asylum based on SOGIESC discrimination is also needed. Moreover, LGBTIQ+ youth, exposed to bullying and cyberbullying and at high risk of violence, urgently need support and protection.
The 5 steps outlined by UN Free & Equal initiative below are additional ways we can each— in our individual capacity, show solidarity and stand for equality. “Human rights are for everyone. No matter who they are or who they love.” #PrideMonth
