I don't have a dog in this hunt but can speak about my wife's experience as a teacher at a Title I school in a different suburban school district here in the KC metro area. Having parents, grandparents, and other friends and family who are middle class or higher makes a huge difference when it comes to PTO and other school-related fundraising. We get wanting to supplement activities and resources for your own kids; but, at what point does it become an unfair advantage over lower-income families and students who don't have the same resources? Can you imagine the fuss that would be created if you even suggested sharing supplemental funding from one school to another? How would you handle the disparity?
One Shawnee Mission school raised $610,000 in donations, while another only got $300

30 years ago, a handful of volunteers and five students who needed support with homework - this was the beginning of Bridge the Gap. The aim? The very same one as today, to give underserved students the tools they need to reach their full potential and to succeed. Fast forward to today, where that vision has grown into something extraordinary. We've built partnerships with schools across Marin, mentored thousands of students and watched them go on to thrive in college and beyond. And this year, as we celebrate 30 years of impact, we’re setting our sights on the future with our $30k in 30 Days campaign. We’re inviting our LinkedIn connections to help us raise $30,000 this holiday season to expand programs that empower the next generation of students to dream bigger and aim higher. Please consider donating as an individual or partner with us as a business that aligns your brand with social impact and transformation. Join us this December in raising $30k to drive academic success and opportunity across Marin. Every dollar invested in equitable education generates measurable returns—higher graduation rates, greater earning potential, and stronger communities. Bridge the Gap’s proven programs have been changing lives for 30 years. Your donation could amplify this impact for generations to come. Why Bridge the Gap? Why Now? During the holiday season, we’re surrounded by opportunities to give. The choices can feel overwhelming—so why choose Bridge the Gap? Because this isn’t just about giving. It’s about investing, here’s why; 1. Education is the most effective way to break cycles of inequality Your donation isn’t just funding programs; it’s creating pathways to college, stable careers, and lifelong success for underserved students in Marin. This is the gift that keeps on giving—not just to one student but to entire families and communities. 2. Every child deserves more than just survival Without intervention, many of the students we serve face systemic barriers that stifle their dreams. With your help, they don’t just stay in school—they thrive. This season, you can give the gift of transformation: showing a student that someone cares enough to invest in their future. 3. You’ll be part of something bigger Your contribution isn’t just about meeting a fundraising goal. It’s about standing with a movement that has transformed thousands of lives over the past 30 years—and will continue to do so for generations to come. There are countless ways to give this season, and we are deeply thankful to those who choose to support us. Your generosity empowers us to provide students with the tools and opportunities they need to build brighter futures. This season, choose impact. Choose transformation. While I work on figuring out the operating agreement and overall business dealings for this charity, I’d love to see if anyone is interested in being on the Board of Directors for a 501(c)3 charitable organization. The organization would be based in Michigan-with myself and my wife acting as CEO/Co-Founders/COO and on the Board as well. We would need be seeking a Secretary and a Treasurer at a minimum. We think 6 people is a good number for a board. We do not expect all members of the board to be involved in the games industry, but a 2-3 of the board members should be. The purpose of the organization would be to provide a sustainable place for children of all ages in low income and inner city housing to come and gain an education in the games industry in whichever area interests them the most. Long term goals include securing a building a to provide all areas of education, bring in speakers, mentors and teachers to continue education, develop a day care center that focuses on STEM initiatives and usher children into the industry. Here’s a list of the services aimed to be provided as time goes on: -It would focus on all stages of childhood, through high school. We would partner with the scholarships available to provide additional funding in fields associated, to allow funding for those charities to go even further, doubling the good in the community. -I’d eventually look to bring industry professionals in to mentor, teach, speak, and advise. -I would look to have daycare-focusing on inner-city children means understanding mom and dad can’t afford childcare for the others. These daycares would focus on STEM to encourage development and interest at a young age. -I would look at partnering with the local school districts for after school care as well as potential in school teachings-like Trade Schools. -I would inquire into allowing a membership to allow additional enrollees. Every paid membership pays a membership for another child/family. -This would help encourage development in the industry in the Midwest, and could even set up partnerships/scholarships for college. -We could run a monthly publication, teaching kids how to write articles and build a brand about their writing, and give them experience.

Sharing a link to a phenomenal grassroots, peer-led organisation compromising of over 11,000 members that I have been involved in for some time - School Can’t Australia. Many know I was appointed to the board late last year to help the organisation transform into an incorporated charity. “School can’t” - not won’t - has always been an issue in Australian schools, but has previously been wrongly framed by professionals as a deliberate and willful act of the child, or even the result of poor parenting. The phenomenon has increased in the past decade, independent of COVID. Attempts by education departments to arrest the issue have failed. Draconian measures - such as fining parents or taking them to court - have exacerbated the problem. Despite being unfunded and peer-led, SCA is leading the way in - correctly - identifying that attendance difficulties are due to the number and intensity of stressors a child faces at school, and is not the result of a deliberate and willful act of the child or poor parenting. In fact - despite enduring significant trauma - most “school can’t” kids still want to be at school. SCA is on a mission to change the narrative, and build capacity in our schools to identify and remove the stressors that children face, so all children can safety be included in, and attend, our schools. Please donate if you can!
School Can’t Australia is currently unfunded. We are run entirely by volunteers. To support our growing parent/carer community of over 11,000 families, we have launched a Go Fund Me page. Your donations will help us cover the management and operational expenses of School Can’t Australia and allow us to pursue more long-term and stable funding sources. Donations will also enable us to develop education resources sharing our group's lived experience knowledge, which will allow us to admit members more quickly and support more parents and carers. Please share this link with your networks. https://lnkd.in/dg6En-W2

This is NOT a post about my day job. Not a career milestone. Not a new professional certification. But this is education-related AND something I deeply care about -- so wanted to share on this 'Giving Tuesday'... 3 years ago, when our oldest started K4, my wife and I became VERY involved with his elementary school. Not in a 'helicopter parent' kind of way. More so volunteering, fundraising, and finding any way we could "help". We were in peak Covid times and saw the BIG gap to be filled. (Full disclosure, volunteering for the school is probably the only thing either of us could truly call a "hobby" at this point 😅) First, my wife became the Co-President of the PTO. But it was a rough start: → There were no parent volunteers. → Student activities had all stopped. → There was a negative PTO fund balance. My wife and I worked with a small handful of other parents. We first brought back social student/family activities. Things like movie nights, bake sales, trunk-or-treat, and the Valentine's family dance. We started PTO fundraising, again, so we could continue to support student field trips, pay for addt'l teacher resources, and coordinate some small teacher appreciation activities. It's been a TON of work. Fast forward to this year: → We have a positive PTO fund balance. → We have 20+ actively involved PTO parents. → We have a variety of regular student/family activities happening throughout the year. AND...this fall 2024, we were able to get a ~$40k new K4/K5 playground structure installed (I had NO IDEA how expensive these play structures are 😬). NOW we are fundraising to replace the school's larger (1st-6th grade) playground structure. If you watch the linked video, you’ll see the kids’ faces, their reactions, and maybe get some insight as to why we give so much of our time to this school, the teachers, and the students. ...If you’ve read this far, my ask is two-fold: 1.) Please share this post! You never know what person or company this post may reach – and it could just impact our fundraising campaign, our school, and many kids in my community. 2.) Consider donating time or money to a school in YOUR community. The smallest gesture can have a bigger impact than you may know. Thanks, everyone! 🙏🙏 Now, back to your regular scheduled LinkedIn programming... Video: https://lnkd.in/g6VA8fqu Donation Page: https://lnkd.in/g4MHTk64

Consider donating to this wonderful non-profit organization that puts on the incredible "Summer YESS" Program! Bethany and I had the privilege of being invited last year to observe the program in action, and we witnessed firsthand the profound impact the kids, volunteers, and staff made on each other. The Summer YESS (Youth Education Summer Socialization) program offers opportunities that no other program can, creating a truly unique experience for everyone involved. Through the collaboration between AbilityPoint, Wichita’s USD 259, The Wichita Department of Park and Recreation, and Sedgwick County, YESS provides education, recreation, and socialization in a community setting. There is no other program like YESS in the nation, offering students, families, and the community a chance to develop friendships, build self-esteem, gain independence, and experience personal growth. Why Summer School? Special Education teachers spend approximately 85% of the fall quarter re-teaching what was lost over the summer. In YESS, students can continue in an educational setting, maintaining what they learned while developing new social skills. The students are challenged through fun educational activities relating to a weekly theme, providing a common goal for all the classes and creating an exciting learning environment. These themes unleash the students’ and teachers’ creativity, and the results are always exhilarating. Let’s support this amazing program and make a difference in the lives of these incredible students. Your donation can help keep the magic of YESS alive, ensuring that more kids can benefit from the exceptional opportunities it offers. Together, we can create a brighter future! Trade donations can be made through the link below. https://lnkd.in/ggSmh4sB #SummerYESSProgram #AbilityPoint #DonateNow #TradebankMember
