Law students, Internships. Get an internship. You need an internship. This is what you are told. Over and over. Internships are important. But we seldom talk about what you should look for in an internship. At least nobody told me. And, since this is my post, what I think you should look for may not be what you think you should look for. 😁 1. You want an internship to get a look at the area of law you are interested in pursuing. Caselaw is different from the practice. You might like to read criminal appellate cases yet hate practicing criminal law. 2. You want an internship to help you develop skills. Skills are necessary to practice law. Law school gives you few useable skills. If you can, find an internship that invests in giving you skills. 3. Connections. Law and life are a connectivity game. You want an internship that allows you to meet many lawyers practicing in the geographical area you want to live in and the practice area you wish to pursue. Be intentional about making these connections. They will matter. There are still internships for the summer. Keep at it if you don't have one. #lawstudents
