In a job market where employees are already looking for multi-horned unicorns, adding personal interests as must-haves is a horn too many. I am actively job hunting and I am seeing so many graphic design job descriptions that list in their requirements “must have a personal interest in” whatever industry they serve. Must have a deep passion for fashion, must have an insatiable love for race cars, must have a fanatical knowledge of real estate. I understand receiving hundreds of applications must encourage job listers to narrow their criteria but graphic design is a dedicated passion all of its own and by nature it’s a chameleon-like skill. When I see that must-have passion listed I am discouraged from applying because I anticipate questions about it in the hiring process. If you’re looking for a graphic designer with interest in your field put it in the desirables, not in the minimum requirements. You’ll attract applications from creatives with the ability to absorb and execute brand guidelines, create engaging designs and, perhaps most importantly, bring a fresh perspective. #creativejobs
