The Florida International University - College of Business Doctoral Student Association (BDSA) will be hosting its Late Stage Conference this upcoming Thursday, September 19, 2024. The event will be held at the FIU College of Business Complex (CBC 155) at 3 pm. The BDSA Late Stage Conference is one of our signature events, in which primarily rising fourth/fifth-year Ph.D. candidates present mock job talks. In other words, they practice, with us, presenting the research that they will present to search committees that they will interview with for professor positions. In addition, right after the conference ends, we will have an early-stage information session for you to learn about resources here at FIU from fellow students! The event will be open to all students and we will be serving some good food, as well. If you are interested and hungry, come check it out. We look forward to connecting with you on campus! Recently attended the Association for Career and Technical Education Region IV in Albuquerque, NM. The states included in this region are: New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Mississippi and Arkansas. I was introduced to CTE last year at their national conference. Many of the members informed about their regional conferences so why not check one out. These are smaller and more intimate conferences where you can get more time with the associates of those regions. I strongly recommend attending regional conferences. Networking! When at the conferences, I do my best to meet with every vendor, if they are at their booth. Ironically enough, the booth next to me was staffed by Colt Almodova. Colt grew up on Oahu and attended the prestigious Kamehameha Schools. Then received his degree from Arizona State University and now is in sales at Advanced Technology Consultants. The other theme that keeps appearing is how Careers By the People ties tightly into the career clusters of the CTE Programs. Transformative Impact. These two words combined have been guiding my perspective on life since realizing in high school that my vocation is to serve others and that education can represent a vehicle to contribute something positive to the world. When I graduated college in 2023, I was determined to continue learning and sharing knowledge in whatever capacity possible. I’m now thrilled to announce that I have been featured in the University of San Francisco Magazine by the Office of Development Communications in a piece titled “Hilltop Campus to Finance Career.” You can read more about my journey and current work with the Alumni Mentor Program and Recent Graduate Alumni Association in the article below. To conclude, here are my five key pillars of leadership and thought: 🧠 Learning is not restricted to the walls of educational institutions. It is a commitment to oneself and to others to engage in self-exploration to evolve as human beings. 🔭 Imagination is the inception of reality. Our minds are canvases that can manifest endless possibilities. 💭 The power of discernment is integral in understanding who we are and establishing an openness and respect for differences in ideas and opinions. ⚖️ Adopting a proactive stance as a lifelong learner in thought and action can allow us to foster environments based on honesty and integrity. ⚡️ Our unique perspectives and ingenuity represent our collective strength. There is an immense opportunity in the fact that we are all extremely diverse.

As Canada Career Month unfolds, I have loved every opportunity so far to share my expertise at conferences, offering insights and resources that underscore the value of #careerdevelopment and #advocacy in shaping the #futureofwork. I sit with so much #gratitude that I get to do this for a living. 🌟 At the CES Career Education Society Conference in Vancouver, I delivered a keynote titled “Crafting the Future: Empowering the Next Generation for Career Success in 2040.” Drawing from CERIC’s "Career Development in 2040" report, I discussed the megatrends shaping our field, from #AI & #automation and work-anywhere cultures to the effects of #climatechange and #generationalshifts. These trends challenge us to reimagine career possibilities and the skills needed for a #resilientworkforce. 🌟 At the ASPECT BC - Association of Service Providers for Employability and Career Training Conference, the wonderful Kay Castelle and I co-presented “Career Advocacy in Action: Tools and Resources”. Together, we explored actionable strategies to advance advocacy in career development, providing tools and resources to help professionals champion the future of career development across Canada. Career development isn’t just about employment; it’s about equipping individuals and communities to thrive in a rapidly changing world. As we continue these important conversations, here are some amazing resources to support ongoing advocacy in our sector.
