Just watched on BBC one Better Off Dead? Short doc by Liz Carr. It made me think differently about assisted dying and thought of Thiandi Grooff — once my student in Amsterdam University College. All my support goes to societies with laws that invest more in the services that would improve quality of life for people living with disabilities. Listens to them. Give them hope. Who knows, one of your loved ones could be next. #qualityoflife #documentary https://lnkd.in/eEbpTN7Y

Signed into law by President George H.W. Bush, the #AmericansWithDisabilitiesAct (ADA) is a landmark civil rights law that prohibits discrimination against people with disabilities in all areas of public life and promotes equal opportunity for people with disabilities. For so many Americans living with disabilities who were often denied access to jobs, schools, and transportation, this bill was more than progress in the right direction, it was the restoration of dignity and the ability to engage fully in society. Today, on the 34th Anniversary of the passage of the ADA, we are reminded that laws like the ADA move us forward in the continued march toward equity. #ADA34 #DisabilityRights #ThanksToTheADA

On 18 July 2024, the International Law Team at 33 Bedford Row will be hosting its first webinar exploring the World Health Organization's (WHO) comments on violence against disabled women. According to WHO statistics, women with disabilities are 1.5 times more likely to be victims of violence compared to women without disabilities. Furthermore, the WHO reports that 1 in 3 women worldwide have experienced either physical or sexual violence in their lifetime, with disabled women facing even higher rates of violence. These statistics highlight the urgent need for discussions and actions to address the issue of violence against disabled women and elder women. I am incredibly proud to be on this panel where we will be delving into this pressing issue. This timely discussion will shed light on the domestic and international policies that pertain to this often-overlooked topic, with the aim of raising awareness and advocating for change. One of the keynote speakers at the webinar will be Dr. Charles O’Mahony, Lecturer at the University of Galway, School of Law) and an expert in Disability Law and Policy. His insights into the legal framework surrounding the protection of disabled women from violence will provide valuable perspectives for attendees. Joining him will be Anna Landre, an internationally recognised disability justice activist and researcher, who will bring her wealth of knowledge and experience to the table. In March this year, the WHO called for greater attention to violence against women with disabilities and elder women. This is a critical step towards recognising and addressing the unique challenges faced by these vulnerable populations. By shining a spotlight on this issue, the webinar seeks to initiate a much-needed conversation on the ways in which society can better protect and support disabled women who are at risk of violence. The panel will examine the implications of the WHO's comments on both a national and global scale, highlighting the urgent need for comprehensive and inclusive policies that safeguard the rights of disabled women. Held during Disability Pride Month, the seminar is a call to action for individuals and institutions to acknowledge the dignity and worth of every person, regardless of their abilities or limitations. The webinar is organised in collaboration with the Association of Disabled Lawyers, and this partnership underscores the importance of amplifying the voices of disabled women and advocating for their rights within the justice system and beyond. Through education, advocacy, and community engagement, the webinar seeks to empower individuals to become agents of change and champions for disability rights. Today is a very important day for all adults with intellectual disabilities in the state of Massachusetts. Whether you are a person with a disability – a family member or friend - or advocate or other staff sharing your experiences or an organizational representative, your story can advance self-direction. At 1pm today there is a public hearing to consider proposed regulations for Self Determination and Self-Directed Services. The Boston Globe recently published a fantastic op-ed regarding the impact of the Real Lives law on adults with intellectual disabilities. Read the op-ed here: https://lnkd.in/eYc5dn9D Read the Worcester Telegram article profiling Post-22 and the impact Real Lives law implementation might have on programs like it. https://lnkd.in/eSf_8iAp
