Too often the Committees, in divergence from counterparts in Holyrood & San Steffan, issue fudge & waffle. Not so this week: "On 26th June the Public Accounts and Public Administration Committee issued a report that addressed the governance of Amgueddfa Cymru/ Museum Wales. The report opened: “The Committee was extremely concerned by the evidence heard about the governance arrangements that were in place at Amgueddfa Cymru. “...We have grave concerns about the processes that have been adopted...not least in the interactions between Amgueddfa Cymru and the Welsh Government. More work needs to be done to ensure that this situation is not repeated at Amgueddfa Cymru, or any other public body. “In the context of these major issues, it is hugely concerning that the Welsh Government’s Tailored Review programme is in the process of being adapted to a self-assessment style of review. The Committee is concerned that this approach will prove to be inadequate in identifying and resolving potentially serious governance issues, such as those exposed by the situation at Amgueddfa Cymru.” The report of 75 pages is deserving of scrutiny and explication." Hallie Flanagan should be regarded as an American hero and the Federal Theater one of the great successes, and tragic cultural losses, of the last century. In our country, there is no "public" support for the arts or its artists, and so it is imperative that art makers (across mediums) find ways to be collaborators, not just competitors. I wish the largest commercial art makers in America (my mind tends to turn towards Hollywood and the Streamers, although there are plenty of financial problems there right now) would collectively join ranks to help finance and fund a national “art fund” or “creative content fund” — a system by which the most successfully commercial projects from across competing companies could, in part, help finance riskier, local, smaller, and stranger pieces of art (or creative content if you prefer those semantics). This would build audiences, and practitioners who are farther away from the status quo — both of which are necessary for the long term health of both the arts and entertainment industry, and our national civic lives.

Love a morning when the first post is something incredibly relevant! Find the full study referenced in the article here: https://lnkd.in/gVJ9CpAH ________ Stand out quote: "Many companies are now experimenting with new models, for both political and practical reasons. There is a new interest in horizontal/collective leadership models, and more skepticism about traditional organizational and compensation structures. " We're seeing changes to structures that haven't been touched in decades out of necessity. Many performing arts groups are trying to get back to pre-pandemic audience levels by doing what worked before. But the audiences spend differently now and there’s little research as to what for sure works. New ideas need to be tried. But the only way you can do that successfully is to have a company efficient and flexible enough to handle multiple inter-departmental changes. With Pivote, you’ll end up with a company workflow so optimized and clear that you can adjust it with ease - no matter what external changes occur.

More from our forthcoming book on Bristol Ideas.
Writer, commentator, interviewer, chair. Former Director: Bristol Ideas, Festival of Ideas, Festival of the Future City. Currently working on projects to 2030 and books including one on Isambard Kingdom Brunel
ACH Smith on Bristol and the arts. Bristol Ideas has had a long relationship with novelist, playwright and poet ACH Smith. His play Up the Feeder, Down the Mouth (2001), provided one of the most magical moments in theatre in the city in recent decades. The Newcomers – the BBC series he refers to here – has been influential in our work. We showed this twice, to full houses. Smith was also a mentor, providing informal advice on Bristol in the 1960s, a period he reflects on here as he looks at the city and the arts over the past six decades. The environment for public funding for culture then was as challenging as it is now. ‘Andrew Kelly emailed me in 1995 for suggestions for memorial plaques to significant artistic figures in Bristol’s history. I offered a few thoughts but finished with: ‘One plaque at Temple Meads could cover them all, though. It might read: “The City of Bristol, always pleased to see the back of artists”.’ This essay is taken from Our Project Was the City: Bristol Ideas 1992-2024, published May 2024.

Looking forward to attending this event. Should be particularly informative in the context of considering the motivations of some to effect power by creating chaos and intimidation through violence and in so doing, displaying a complete disregard for fundamental human rights & international law with impunity. To quote the title of a book by John Healy, why has “No one shouted STOP!”?
Established Professor of Law at University of Galway. Commissioner at Law Reform Commission (2012-2020)
The date for this Galway International Arts Festival event that I’m doing with Blinne Ní Ghrálaigh KC has been changed to Saturday 27th July at 5:30pm in The Human Biology Building, University of Galway. Ticket sales have resumed via this link:

The big news of the day is that Toronto's oldest movie theatre, the historic Revue Cinema, is shutting its doors amidst landlord disputes. This news comes on the heels of the Science Centre closure, the Hot Docs theatre closure, and the closure of Ontario Place. These cherished places are incredibly meaningful to the people of Toronto: public green space, museums and arts venues are not simple gathering places for residents of our city, they each play a spiritual role in fostering spaces for reflection, rest, escape. Especially for poor artists. In the privacy of our little dinner parties, the most common question circling around the minds of young and emerging artists revolves around housing: can we afford to live in the city anymore? When we are presented with such hostility by our provincial and municipal administrations? Without our theatres, where we will screen our films? In the midst of a severe housing crisis, where will we live? Big questions amidst these tragic closures.
