🇲🇬Trends in Madagascar's Aquaculture Sector Aquaculture production in Madagascar has shown steady growth, increasing from 7,980 tonnes in 2000 to 16,396 tonnes in 2021🐟🐠🦐 Although the annual growth rate of 3.49% was lower than sub-regional, regional, and global averages, it represents a significant development in the industry🐟🐠🦐 Inland aquaculture's contribution to Madagascar's overall production has declined over the years, from 31.1% in 2000 to 8.1% in 2021. This contrasts with the higher shares seen in Eastern Africa (73.8%) and globally (44.7%)🐠🦐🐟 Seaweed dominated Madagascar's aquaculture production quantity in 2021, accounting for 71.1%. However, its share in production value was only 5%. In contrast, giant tiger prawn, while comprising 20.6% of the production quantity, contributed significantly more to the production value at 79.1%🐟🐠🦐 #aquaculture #madagascar #industrytrends

In a country of 216 million people, 50% of which, rely on fish as their source of animal protein, the opportunity for aquaculture is enormous. At the very least, it could provide NGN1.56Trillion in additional annual revenue from Fish. Aquaculture could also provide several opportunities for employment, particularly for women and youth. An agricultural industry that is resilient, market led, profitable...will drive socio-economic development in communities and reduce poverty (a key driver of crime and insecurity). Nigeria aquaculture (fish farming) is largely driven by SMEs and there are opportunities for growth due to abundant natural resources, including freshwater, rich soil, labour and diverse crops (for local feed production). The sector faces several challenges, including poor infrastructure, incoherent policies, high cost of feeds, access to finance etc. These issues are well documented and known to all stakeholders. Seasonal abundance of brown seaweed, Sargassum sp. in Malaysia. Malaysia’s extensive coastline and tropical climate provide an ideal habitat for Sargassum. Found in abundance along the coastal regions of Sabah, Sarawak, and Peninsular Malaysia, this seaweed is naturally available, reducing the initial cost of sourcing raw materials. Moreover, with proper cultivation practices, Sargassum farming can be integrated into existing seaweed aquaculture systems. So far, there is no Sargassum aquaculture in Malaysia. This species is rich in potassium, nitrogen, and trace minerals, making it an excellent raw material for organic fertilisers and biostimulants. Malaysian farmers, particularly in the palm oil and paddy sectors, could benefit from eco-friendly fertilisers derived from Sargassum.
