Understanding the Organizational Structure of the Indian Army The Indian Army, one of the largest and most formidable military forces in the world, operates with a meticulously designed organizational structure that ensures efficiency, discipline, and strategic depth. Here’s a brief overview: 1️⃣ Command Structure: The Army is divided into seven commands, each responsible for a specific region of India. These include six operational commands and one training command. Each command is led by a General Officer Commanding-in-Chief (GOC-in-C) of the rank of Lieutenant General. 2️⃣ Corps: Commands are further divided into Corps, the main operational units of the Army. Each Corps is responsible for specific tactical operations and is commanded by a Corps Commander, also of the rank of Lieutenant General. 3️⃣ Divisions: Each Corps contains Divisions, typically tasked with managing and conducting operations in specific areas. This was making the rounds a couple of months ago- a memo from a 1st Lieutenant (name redacted, but could be 'Neidermayer') of a US Army unit, banning the writing or utterance of a phrase which, he felt, degraded operational readiness. That the phrase was likely *in* the soldier's lexicon because it was good for morale, is likely lost on him; he has the bars, he gets to issue the orders, because he is In Charge. Yup, gotcha sir. What's coming next- a memo reading "Floggings will continue until morale improves'? No wonder the army can't retain or recruit people. There are a plethora of reasons, but this would be one of my top ones- a rank heavy, immature bully trying to make a name for himself for all the wrong reasons. 'The most dangerous thing in the world' is NOT an officer with a map; it's an officer with a memo pad and a chip on his shoulders who has not yet been reality-checked by his platoon sergeant, Warrant Officer, and Sergeants-Major. #USArmy #infantry #UCMJ #TFReaper #WestPoint #officer #leadership #organizationalculture #morale

My first assignment here at the U.S. Army Senior Leaders Course (SLC) is an analytical essay about the Thunder Run. A battle that my Uncle Mark R. Rasins, Sr. fought in.  The Thunder Run was a rapid armored assault conducted by the U.S. Army's 3rd Infantry Division in April 2003 during the Iraq War. It involved a series of bold and aggressive tank and mechanized infantry raids into the heart of Baghdad, which ultimately led to the fall of the city and the collapse of Saddam Hussein's regime. I recently posted my experience with new generation soldiers taking interest and asking questions about battles in my unit’s past. My Uncle Mark has battles he fought in being studied at Army leaders courses! The 2 key principles that stood out most to me was the mutual trust and shared understanding during the operation. The overarching plan was foundationed on the trust commanders had that their soldiers were trained to handle any unforeseen chaos and adapt to any situation that might ensue. In fact they were hoping for it. The shared understanding of the intent enabled leaders at every single echelon to make necessary critical decisions to achieve the mission. I have to ask myself. Do we today as a military culture maintain strong mutual trust between senior and junior soldiers? Is there a continuous shared understanding? Obviously from a now peacetime lens.
