🎓 I’m pleased to share that I have successfully completed my PhD, earning a doctorate in Civil Engineering with a focus on the numerical modeling of Nature-based Solutions for coastal defense systems, specifically in wave-vegetation interactions for applications such as seagrasses and mangroves. I hope this research contributes to the transition toward a greener and more sustainable future.   A PhD is rarely achieved alone; it’s a collective effort. Foremost, my deepest thanks go to my supervisors, Prof. Peter Troch and Dr. Vicky Stratigaki, whose academic guidance, support, and personal mentorship have been invaluable. I am also grateful to Prof. Marleen De Troch for her support and for adding a multidisciplinary dimension (biology) to this work.   Finally, I extend heartfelt thanks to my examination board for their time, insights, and constructive guidance that elevated this research. The aim of this post is to motivate PhD students who made need to hear this today. If you are currently stuck on a certain task, don’t give up. Keep working on it you will find ways to improve the system that you initially built for yourself, as this will help you move closer to your goal. It has been 8 years since I graduated with my third degree, a PhD in civil engineering specialising in road safety. As I have continued working in the field of road safety, my thesis has become a valuable resource to me that I refer back to regularly. Every time I check something, I come across the module I built first time in my life: Fixed Parameter Negative Binomial approach 😃. Seeing below models brings a big smile to my face every time I see it, because, at the time, I never imagined I would be able to conduct such advanced technical analysis. I have to say that this was the most difficult part of the work I have done. Which I can now progress this so easily. However, following a system for achieving this, surrounded myself with great support, not giving up and continuity, made it possible. P.S. Please note that the modules below are not my final ones. They were built only for comparison purposes, so I kindly ask that you do not reference them in literature. All definitions in detail are found in my thesis.
